Chapter 14 - Dawn Over the BayBy dawn, the storm had finally broken, leaving behind a breathtaking, crisp October morning. The sky over Massachusetts Bay was painted in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

Dante brought me back to the Old Wharf Diner. The newly painted sign above the door gleamed in the morning light, and through the sparkling front windows, we could see Mr. Callahan sitting comfortably in his usual corner booth, sipping a steaming mug of black coffee while Tommy wiped down the spotless counter.

We stood outside on the wooden boardwalk, the cool ocean breeze catching our hair. Dante turned to me, his slate eyes no longer carrying the cold, untouchable menace of the criminal underworld, but a quiet, profound warmth.

“The federal grand jury delivered their final indictments against Petrov’s syndicate an hour ago,” Dante said softly. “The North Atlantic shipping routes are fully secured under the independent maritime trust. Your grandmother’s medical team called—she’s coming home to the Beacon Hill brownstone tomorrow.”

I looked up at him, my heart swelling with an emotion I no longer tried to hide. “And what about you, Dante? What happens to the mafia boss who stopped to pay an old man’s fourteen-dollar breakfast tab?”

Dante smiled, reaching out to gently take my hand in his warm, calloused palm, his fingers intertwining with mine.

“The mafia boss retired the moment he realized that some debts aren't calculated in currency, Clara,” he murmured, stepping closer until there was no space left between us. “Some debts are paid in a lifetime of staying right by your side.”
