THE MAFIA'S FROZEN EMPRESS / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Fall of the von Berg Banking HouseIn early spring, the federal trials of Heinrich von Berg, Charles Sterling, and their co-conspirators concluded with historic, devastating efficiency.

With the recovery of the Zurich foundry ledgers, the decrypted wire-transfer records from Liechtenstein, and Charles Sterling’s signed confession, the federal grand jury returned guilty verdicts across ninety-four counts of corporate manslaughter, defense procurement fraud, and international racketeering.

Heinrich von Berg was sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole at Thorberg Prison in Bern.

Charles Sterling was sentenced to thirty-two years at the Federal Correctional Facility in Lenzburg.

The von Berg foundries were dismantled and re-tooled under union supervision.

Their multi-billion-franc banking dynasties, their private luxury yachts on Lake Geneva, and their commercial real estate holdings were completely liquidated by federal court decree.

Eighty percent of the recovered capital—over three hundred million francs—was transferred directly into the newly chartered Moretti Institute for Materials Science and Labor Safety, providing free engineering education, housing defense, and full legal advocacy for low-income working families across the alpine valleys.

On the afternoon following the final sentencing, Gabriel took Bella and Seraphina down to the newly restored shipping berths at the Saint-Gothard entrance.

The old, neglected foundries where the defective alloy had been poured were completely demolished.

In their place stood a magnificent, three-story materials research academy and testing center constructed from red brick, polished steel, and expansive glass windows overlooking the valley.

Above the main entrance, carved in gleaming white alpine marble, were the words:

THE SERAPHINA MORETTI ACADEMY OF ADVANCED METALLURGY — WHERE TRUTH IS RESTORED AND COURAGE RULES FOREVER.

Gabriel stood beside Seraphina on the private boardwalk, his hand resting gently on her waist, while Bella ran along the wooden railing with her golden retriever puppy, watching the giant electric freight locomotives glide through the clean mountain tunnel under full, magnificent power.

“What do you think, Donna Seraphina?” Gabriel asked softly, looking down into her ice-gray eyes.

“It’s beautiful, Gabriel,” she whispered, tears of profound, eternal peace stinging her eyes. “My grandfather would have loved to see these rails hum with honest steel.”

“He is here, Seraphina,” Gabriel smiled, pulling her close against his side as the clean alpine wind ruffled their hair. “Every time an honest train runs through these mountains, he will always be here.”
