Chapter 13 - Cleaning House along the Strip

The following three weeks were a whirlwind of joyous celebration and new beginnings.
Under Rose’s direction, the Quinn Foundation established an independent legal defense clinic in downtown Las Vegas—providing free tenant defense, medical advocacy, and emergency financial relief for working-class families facing predatory gaming debt.
The domestic and technical staff at the Bellagio and Santoro Enterprises were given permanent employment contracts with full pension benefits, union wages, and comprehensive healthcare coverage under the newly chartered Santoro Labor Accord.
Mrs. Gable was promoted to Chief of Estate Administration, overseeing a fully staffed, respectful household where no worker was ever treated as an invisible servant.
One Saturday morning in July, Rose walked into the grand salon of the penthouse.
The room had been completely remodeled, its dark, foreboding tapestries replaced with warm cream linen and expansive glass viewing bays overlooking the fountains.
Beside the central fireplace rested a custom silver shadowbox lined with dark red velvet, with a brass plaque reading:
THE LODESTONE IN THE ROSE GARDEN — DEDICATED TO TOBY QUINN, WHOSE MAGNET WOKE THE KING.
Inside the shadowbox, preserved beneath museum-grade crystal, was the heavy iron horseshoe magnet and the severed red copper wire from that fateful afternoon, polished and clean, mounted beside an antique pair of silver drafting dividers.
Rose stood before the shadowbox, her fingers gently touching the crystal frame, feeling no pain, no fear—only the deep, unshakeable triumph of a family that had walked through the fire and emerged unbroken.
Footsteps sounded softly on the parquet floor.
Dante walked into the salon, carrying nine-year-old Toby on his broad shoulders.
Toby reached down, giggling happily, his tiny fingers tangling in his dark hair, before pointing toward the silver shadowbox.
Dante looked up at the boy, then looked at Rose, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made her heart overflow.
He reached out with his free hand, pulling Rose against his side, kissing her temple with infinite gentleness.
“What are you thinking, Donna Rose?” Dante murmured softly.
Rose looked up at him, her lips curving into a radiant, beautiful smile.
“I was thinking about that afternoon in the garden, Dante,” she whispered. “I was terrified that you would throw my boy into the street.”
Dante smiled down at her, his baritone rich and steady as the mountain rock.

“And you brought the light to this entire empire, Rose. For all of us.”
