Chapter 6 - Shadows Over Manhattan

The smoke from my Cuban cigar curled lazily toward the ceiling of my private penthouse office in downtown Manhattan, dissolving into the amber glow of the city lights below. Forty-eight hours had passed since the bloodless purge in the Moretti boardroom. Marcus Vance and his inner circle of traitors were currently cooling their heels in a secure, undisclosed holding facility miles beneath the city, waiting for the full weight of underworld justice to crush them. But closing one branch of the Eastern Syndicate was merely swatting at hornets; the true nest lay right here in the heart of Manhattan.

My cell phone buzzed against the polished mahogany desk. I picked it up, unlocking the encrypted interface with a quick retinal scan. The screen flashed a secure encrypted data packet forwarded by my elite tech unit, who had spent the last two days peeling back the firewall protections on Victor Hale’s master terminal.

"Boss," came the gravelly voice of Luca, my most trusted capos who had miraculously remained untainted by the Eastern Syndicate's corruption, through the secure speaker. "We’ve cracked the second layer of Victor’s server logs. The financial backing doesn't just trace back to local syndicates. It leads straight to the top of the international shipping cartel controlled by Arthur Sterling."

Arthur Sterling. The name alone carried the weight of a multi-billion-dollar global shipping empire, legal fronts, and political immunity that stretched all the way to Washington. For years, Sterling had tried to muscle his way into the Moretti port logistics, always failing because I kept a chokehold on every container entering the eastern seaboard. Now, the puzzle clicked into focus: Sterling hadn't just wanted my ports; he had wanted to turn my entire syndicate into his personal drug and weapons courier service without firing a single shot.

"Sterling thinks he's untouchable because his name graces the Forbes billionaire list," I said, my voice cutting through the secure line with cold, measured certainty. "He assumed that by installing a neural relay in my spine, he could steer my entire empire like a remote-controlled drone. He miscalculated."

"What's your play, Dante?" Luca asked, tension tightening his vocal cords. "Sterling's headquarters on Park Avenue is guarded by a private army. We can't just walk in there with assault rifles without sparking an all-out war that will bring federal agencies down on our heads."

"We aren't going to start a war, Luca," I replied, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "We're going to pay a quiet, professional visit to a billionaire who thinks he owns the world. Get the armored sedan ready. We leave in twenty minutes."

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the rain-slicked skyscrapers of Manhattan. My mind was completely clear. No phantom static. No sudden neurological fog. Every heartbeat felt grounded, steady, and entirely my own. Sterling had thought he owned my thoughts, but he was about to learn what happens when a sleeping predator finally wakes up.
