Chapter 9 - The Dismantling of an Empire

Within twenty-four hours, Arthur Sterling’s multi-billion-dollar global logistics empire began to unravel with terrifying speed.
Using the master encryption keys recovered from Sterling's personal terminal and the financial confessions extracted during our brief meeting in his penthouse, my elite cyber-forensics team systematically dismantled his offshore accounts, seized control of his shipping ports, and transferred his primary corporate assets directly into the Moretti syndicate holdings. Federal regulatory agencies, anonymously tipped off with ironclad evidence of money laundering and illegal arms trafficking, descended upon Sterling Global Logistics like a pack of wolves. By sunrise, federal arrest warrants had been issued, freezing all of Sterling's corporate and personal assets.
I sat in my private library back at the Moretti mansion, watching the morning news broadcast on the large wall-mounted screen. The news anchor was breathlessly reporting on the sudden, catastrophic collapse of Sterling Global Logistics, citing massive federal raids and the unexpected resignation of its CEO amid allegations of international corruption.
The door to the library opened softly, and Isabella Romano walked in.
She looked a shadow of her former self. Gone was the high-society glamour, the designer dresses, and the arrogant confidence. She wore a simple black turtleneck and dark trousers, her wrists bound by temporary zip-ties, escorted by two of my loyal enforcers. Since the night of the purge, she had been held in the estate's secure holding wing, waiting for her final disposition.
She stopped a few feet away from my desk, her emerald eyes looking at me with a mixture of fear and lingering defiance.
"Are you going to kill me, Dante?" she asked, her voice surprisingly steady, though her hands trembled slightly. "After everything we shared—every night, every conversation—are you just going to put a bullet in my head and throw me in the river?"
I turned off the television, the screen going black, and leaned back in my leather chair. I looked at the woman who had shared my bed while quietly selling my secrets to the highest bidder.
May you like
"Kill you, Isabella?" I asked quietly. "No. Death is too easy. It's a clean escape from accountability. You loved power, Isabella. You loved the thrill of being at the top, of pulling the strings behind the scenes." I stood up slowly and walked around the desk, stopping just inches from her. "So, I’m not going to kill you. I’m going to strip you of every penny, every asset, every alias, and every connection you ever had. You are going to walk out the front gates of this estate with nothing more than the clothes on your back, and you are going to start over in a world where no one knows your name. If you ever step foot in my city again, I won't hesitate."
Isabella stared at me, the horror dawning in her eyes realizing that my punishment was far more merciless than a quick execution. Without another word, I signaled Luca to escort her out. The heavy oak doors closed behind her, sealing her fate forever.
