Chapter 10 - Shadows in the Courtyard

As dinner concluded and Michael excused himself to review evening security reports with Marco, Luca and I stepped out through the arched French doors onto the stone-paved veranda overlooking the moonlit gardens. The night air was crisp, carrying the distant, rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the Chicago breakwater. I wrapped my arms lightly around myself against the chill, leaning against the stone balustrade. Luca stood beside me, resting his forearm on the ledge, looking out over the manicured boxwood hedges and towering oak trees. “You’ve given me a new life, Mr. Moretti,” I said softly, breaking the quiet hush of the garden. “Two days ago, I was surviving paycheck to paycheck, terrified of losing a housekeeping job. Now I’m managing family archives and sitting at your private dining table.” Luca turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine in the pale moonlight. “You didn't take anything that wasn't already yours, Emily. People like Vanessa Bellini and Carlo Vitale believe power comes from last names, bank accounts, and high-society connections. They are dead wrong.” He reached out, his warm fingers lightly brushing against my knuckles where they rested on the stone balustrade. A sudden, electric jolt shot up my arm, making my breath catch in my throat. “Real power,” Luca continued, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register, “comes from courage, loyalty, and the willingness to stand up when everyone else chooses to look away.” I couldn't look away from him. The terrifying, dangerous aura that made rival syndicates tremble seemed to vanish entirely, replaced by an intense, unwavering focus directed solely at me. “And what happens now?” I whispered. Luca’s thumb gently stroked the back of my hand. “Now, we rebuild everything stronger than before. And you stay right by my side where you belong.”
