Chapter 4 - The Interrogation in the Cellar

Deep beneath the mansion’s foundation, the private security holding cells were cold, damp, and smelled of rust and unyielding concrete. Luca walked down the spiral iron staircase with slow, measured footsteps, his black tailored coat brushing against the damp stone walls. I followed a few steps behind, flanked by Marco, who carried a heavy iron ring of keys. In the center of the largest holding cell, Salvatore Bellini and his daughter Vanessa sat on a hard wooden bench, their high-society composure entirely shattered. Vanessa’s designer red gown was stained with dust, her hair falling in wild strands around her pale face, while her father sat staring blankly at the concrete floor. As the heavy iron cell door swung open with a screech of ungreased hinges, Vanessa scrambled to her feet, rushing toward the bars. “Luca! Please!” she sobbed, clutching the cold iron bars with her manicured hands. “You can’t do this! We’re supposed to be married next month! The wedding invitations have already gone out to half of Europe!” Luca stopped just outside the cell, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets, his face carved from granite. “There is no wedding, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice devoid of any warmth. “And there is no corporate merger. Your father attempted to use federal grand jury files to blackmail my brother out of his rightful inheritance.” Salvatore finally looked up, his voice cracking with panic. “Luca, be reasonable! The shipping lines need fresh capital! Vitale offered forty million dollars for the downtown properties—it was a smart business move!” “It wasn't business, Salvatore,” Luca replied quietly. “It was treason against my family.” He turned his head slightly, signaling Marco to step forward. Marco unlocked a heavy steel briefcase and placed it on a table just outside the cell, flipping open the latches to reveal stacks of sensitive documents, encrypted communication transcripts, and offshore bank routing numbers. “These files were recovered from your private terminal five minutes after we locked the dining room doors,” Luca continued, looking directly at Vanessa. “They detail your secret meetings with Carlo Vitale in Rome, your agreement to sell my father’s original diner to a syndicate front company, and the forged federal indictments you manufactured against my brother.” Vanessa’s knees buckled, and she slid down the iron bars until she sat crumpled on the concrete floor, weeping hysterically. “You’re ruining us,” she choked out. “My family will be a laughingstock across the entire eastern seaboard.” “Your family chose greed over loyalty,” Luca said coldly. “Be grateful I’m handing you over to federal authorities instead of dealing with you the old-fashioned way.” He turned on his heel, motioning for me to follow him back up the stairs. The Bellini dynasty was officially dead.
