Chapter 9 - The Private Banquet Hall

The private dining hall was bathed in the warm, golden glow of candlelight reflecting off polished silver and crystal glassware. Unlike the massive formal banquet hall where Vanessa had staged her disastrous dinner party the night before, this intimate dining room was reserved exclusively for inner family circle gatherings. Luca was already seated at the head of the mahogany table, wearing a dark cashmere sweater that softened the sharp, intimidating lines of his mafia-boss persona. As I walked in, flanked by Michael, Luca stood up from his chair—a gesture of profound respect that left me momentarily speechless. “Welcome, Emily,” Luca said, his deep voice rich with sincerity. “Please, sit.” I took a seat directly across from him, while Michael sat to my right, pouring sparkling mineral water into my crystal glass. Moments later, the estate’s head chef personally wheeled in a silver serving cart laden with steaming plates of handmade rigatoni in a rich, slow-simmered Neapolitan tomato and basil sauce. The aroma filled the room instantly, bringing a sudden, bittersweet rush of childhood memories of my grandmother standing over her kitchen stove in our modest apartment. I took a hesitant bite, closing my eyes as the authentic flavors melted on my tongue. It tasted exactly like Caterina’s cooking—not a high-society imitation, but the real, soulful food of southern Italy. “Well?” Luca asked quietly, watching me closely from across the table. “Is it approved by the family historian?” I opened my eyes, blinking back a sudden prickle of tears. “It’s... it’s identical to my grandmother’s recipe,” I whispered. “How did you know?” Luca smiled—a rare, genuine expression that transformed his rugged features entirely. “When you spoke of your grandmother Caterina yesterday, I had my culinary director pull records from her old neighborhood bakery in Naples. Some things in life deserve to be preserved exactly as they were.”
