Chapter 11 - The Federal Indictment Unsealed

The federal district court building in downtown Chicago loomed like a fortress of dark granite against the morning sky. Inside the high-security courtroom, flashbulbs popped and reporters whispered frantically as federal marshals led Salvatore Bellini and his daughter Vanessa toward the defense table in handcuffs and grey jumpsuits. From the secure gallery balcony behind the prosecution, I watched alongside Marco as the presiding federal judge reviewed the multi-count indictment charging the Bellini family with grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and attempted kidnapping. Salvatore stared blankly ahead, his legal counsel frantically shuffling papers while refusing to meet his eyes. Vanessa kept her head bowed low, her hair shielding her face from the press cameras flashing relentlessly from the aisles. The evidence we had provided—encrypted communication logs, financial routing numbers, and insider witness testimony—was airtight, leaving zero room for bail or negotiation. As the judge formally denied bail and remanded both defendants to federal custody pending trial, a profound sense of closure settled over my chest. The nightmare that had threatened to tear the Moretti family apart from the inside out was officially over, neutralized by truth, vigilance, and an immigrant housemaid who refused to stay silent. Marco placed a heavy hand approvingly on the back of my seat. “Clean sweep, Emily. The boss sends his regards from the administrative tower; he’s reviewing the final shipping clearances as we speak.” I nodded, standing up smoothly from my seat as the courtroom emptied out. It was time to return home to the archives.
