Chapter 4 - The Broken Frame in the Guest SuiteBy 1:15 AM, the second-floor master corridor was deathly still.

Daniel met us outside Vanessa Bellini’s private guest suite, holding an electronic master keycard and a suppressed tactical carbine.

“Her three private bodyguards from the Bellini estate were disarmed at the gatehouse twenty minutes ago, boss,” Daniel reported in a low, flat rasp. “No shots fired. Miss Bellini took two sleeping capsules after dinner. She is completely out.”

Luca gave a single, curt nod. “Open the lock.”

The electronic deadbolt retracted with an oiled click.

Luca pushed the heavy mahogany door open, stepping silently into the darkened bedroom.

The air was thick with the scent of tuberose perfume, spilled champagne, and expensive silk.

Vanessa lay sprawled across the king-sized bed, wearing an emerald satin slip, her blonde curls tangled over the lace pillows, her breathing deep and rhythmic under the influence of the sedatives.

On the antique dressing table across the room sat her diamond jewelry cases, her evening clutches, and an open leather travel desk.

Luca walked directly past the bed, ignoring the sleeping woman as if she were a corpse in a parlor.

He stopped before the armoire, opening the double mirrored doors.

Resting on the top shelf, half-concealed beneath a folded cashmere shawl, was a velvet-lined jewelry casket stamped with the crest of the Bellini family.

Luca lifted the casket, setting it onto the dressing table beneath the lamp.

He clicked the brass latch.

Inside lay the signed retainer agreement with William Mercer, three unsealed envelopes addressed to Claire Moretti, and an unexecuted power of attorney authorizing Salvatore Bellini to assume control of the Calumet Maritime Terminal.

Beside the documents lay an antique picture frame carved from solid silver.

Luca picked up the frame.

The glass was cracked down the middle. Inside was a photograph of Luca, his father Antonio, and his ex-wife Claire celebrating the opening of Pier 14 seven years ago.

Vanessa had scratched Claire’s face out of the print with a metal stylus, writing a single word across the paper in jagged red lipstick: MINE.

Luca stared at the ruined photograph. His face did not register anger; it settled into that terrifying, mathematical detachment that preceded a massacre on the riverfront docks.

He set the silver frame face-down on the table.

“Leave the documents,” Luca commanded quietly. “Leave the bags. She will put on her designer gown tomorrow morning. She will stand in front of thirty syndicate commanders. And she will answer for every drop of blood spilled under this roof.”

He turned toward me, his dark eyes softening into something deep, protective, and unshakeable.

“Come, Olivia. Mrs. Carter has prepared the master suite in the east wing. You will sleep beneath my shield tonight.”
