Chapter 5 - A Debt Paid in GoldAt 7:00 AM, the cold winter sun broke over Lake Michigan in a sharp, blinding blaze of sapphire and gold.

Inside the private sunroom of the estate’s east wing, I sat propped against soft velvet cushions, holding a warm mug of peppermint tea that Mrs. Carter had prepared with a motherly smile.

My bruised cheek had been treated with cool medical compresses, the dark swelling finally receding into a pale, faint shadow.

The double French doors swung open, and Luca walked in.

He wore an unbuttoned white dress shirt and dark tailored trousers, looking refreshed, powerful, and remarkably whole. In his right hand, he carried a secure tablet.

He sat beside me on the chaise lounge, turning the screen toward my face.

On the live video feed, my nineteen-year-old sister, Chloe, was sitting in the sunlit living room of a brand-new, fully furnished two-bedroom brownstone in Lincoln Park.

Two private nurses were setting up an advanced medical air-filtration system, while fresh groceries and warm pastries were being delivered to the kitchen island.

“Your sister was moved to Lincoln Park at dawn, Olivia,” Luca said softly, his deep baritone rumbling with genuine warmth. “The deed to the property has been registered in your name, paid in full in perpetuity. Her pulmonary specialist from Northwestern Memorial has already completed her first evaluation. Her medical trust has been funded with five million dollars.”

Tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude blurred my vision, spilling over my lashes before I could stop them.

“Mr. Moretti... Luca... five million dollars? A brownstone? I cannot accept this... I could work three lifetimes and never earn a fraction of that—”

“You don't repay family, Olivia,” Luca murmured gently, reaching out with his large, calloused hand, his thumb wiping a tear from my cheekbone with breathtaking tenderness.

The touch was so gentle, so completely at odds with his terrifying reputation, that my heart hammered against my ribs.

“You took an iron door to the bone to protect my family’s honor,” he whispered, his gray eyes searching mine with an intensity that took the air from my lungs. “You gave me the truth that saved my life. In this house, that kind of loyalty is answered with an empire.”

Before I could answer, Daniel stepped into the room, his expression rigid with operational readiness.

“Boss. Claire Moretti has arrived through the private security gate. She is waiting in the conservatory.”

Luca stood up smoothly, his gentle expression snapping back into the cold, impenetrable mask of the sovereign.

“Bring the Mercer file to the conservatory, Daniel.”

He looked down at me, extending his hand.

“Come with me, Olivia. It’s time to close the ledger.”
