Chapter 6 - Midnight on the Calumet RiverThe glass conservatory was bathed in crisp morning light, filled with fragrant orange blossoms, white orchids, and towering Mediterranean palms.

Sitting at an antique wrought-iron table was Claire Moretti.

Thirty-six years old, strikingly elegant in a tailored camel-hair coat, her dark hair swept back in a classic chignon, her face carrying the quiet, aristocratic dignity of an old-money Chicago family.

When the doors opened, Claire stood up, looking at Luca with cautious, guarded eyes.

“Luca,” Claire said softly. “Your security detail told me it was an emergency concerning my father’s trust.”

“It is, Claire,” Luca replied, walking across the flagstones.

He introduced me with unhurried reverence. “This is Olivia Hayes. She manages my household archives.”

Claire offered me a polite, discerning nod, her eyes catching the faint bruise along my cheekbone.

Luca laid the manila folder from Mercer’s briefcase onto the glass table.

He opened the file, revealing the staged surveillance photographs, the forged hotel invoices, and the fabricated text messages alleging a five-year affair between Luca and Vanessa Bellini.

Claire picked up the documents, her sharp eyes scanning the dates and locations.

As she read, all the color drained from her face.

“My God, Luca...” Claire whispered, her hand trembling against the paper. “These photographs were supposed to be delivered to my penthouse at the Drake at noon today.”

“Along with an anonymous tip advising you to forfeit your custodial proxy on the Calumet terminal,” Luca added, his voice flat as an open grave.

Claire looked up, her eyes wide with sudden, sickening comprehension.

“Salvatore Bellini,” she breathed. “Salvatore approached my attorneys three weeks ago, offering to buy my custodial rights for thirty million dollars. When I refused, he warned me that Luca was betraying me behind my back.”

She looked at me, taking in the bruised cheek and the quiet, fearless dignity in my posture.

“You discovered this, Olivia?”

“I heard Vanessa give the orders to the investigator in the guest suite yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Moretti,” I answered softly. “She told him that if you believed Luca had been cheating on you for five years, you would sign the forfeiture out of pure spite.”

Claire closed the file with a sharp, decisive snap.

She reached across the table, taking my hand into both of hers, her eyes shining with deep, profound respect.

“You saved this family from an unspeakable catastrophe, Olivia,” Claire said, her voice rich with genuine gratitude.

She looked at Luca, a faint, wry smile touching her lips.

“Your father always said that the greatest threat to a throne comes from the snakes who smile at your banquet, Luca.”

“The snakes are about to be crushed, Claire,” Luca replied smoothly.

Claire picked up her fountain pen from her handbag.

Without a second of hesitation, she signed the unconditional transfer of the Calumet Maritime Terminal directly to Luca Moretti, sliding the heavy legal document across the table.

“Take your terminal, Luca,” Claire smiled warmly. “And make sure the Bellini family never sets foot on this river again.”
