Chapter 8 - The Council of River BaronsA collective gasp ripped through the forty syndicate commanders seated along the mahogany table.

Above the fireplace, the high-definition presentation screen flared to life.
The surveillance video from the upstairs corridor played in agonizing, crystal-clear detail:
The timestamp was clear: YESTERDAY, 03:49 PM.
The footage showed Vanessa Bellini grabbing my shoulder, pulling me violently into the guest room, and Mercer stepping forward before I stumbled into the hallway, my cheekbone crashing into the heavy doorframe.
And then the audio from Mercer’s encrypted tape filled the vaulted room, Vanessa’s voice clear, cold, and venomous:
“Make sure the photographs are delivered to Claire at the Drake before noon. Tell her Luca has been having an affair with me for five years. Once she forfeits the voting shares out of spite, the Calumet terminal belongs to my father.”
The banquet hall went so cold that not a single man dared to breathe.
Salvatore Bellini’s face turned the color of wet cement.
His hand shook so violently that his water glass shattered against the floor, cold liquid splashing across his polished shoes.
“This... this is an illegal surveillance trap!” Salvatore shouted, his voice cracking into frantic, desperate panic. “A manipulated deepfake manufactured by my commercial rivals! Luca, you cannot believe this digital fabrication!”
Luca didn't raise his voice.
He reached into his breast pocket and tossed the signed transfer deed from Claire Moretti onto the tablecloth in front of the older mobster.
“The voting shares are in my hand, Salvatore,” Luca said, each word falling like an iron weight. “Signed by Claire two hours ago.”
He turned his gaze onto Vanessa.
Vanessa had backed away toward the buffet sideboard, her hands clutching her ivory lace suit, her chest heaving as if she were suffocating.
“You told me Olivia hit her face on the pantry door yesterday afternoon, Vanessa,” Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal intensity.
Vanessa began to sob, tears carving black tracks through her expensive foundation.
“Luca... please! It was my father! He lost eighty million dollars to the Tampico cartel! They were going to burn our home to the ground! We had no choice!”
“You stood in my home with a blackmailer,” Luca said, his gray eyes turning to black voids of death. “And when a twenty-eight-year-old girl walked into that room, you shoved her into a solid oak door to protect your theft.”

He looked at Daniel.
“Bring in the federal task force.”
