Chapter 3 - The Rosewater and the Broken BowlMidnight approached as the eye of the Category 4 hurricane swept across the Florida coastline, plunging the island into a deceptive, terrifying calm.

Down in the subterranean seawall vault, the air was still heavy with the scent of saltwater and damp concrete. Sofia sat on an overturned paint bucket beside Christian Senior’s wheelchair, feeding him a small portion of warm chicken broth she had managed to smuggle from the main kitchen walk-in.
With every spoonful, she spoke softly, her hands resting gently over her swollen belly.
“I’m scared, John,” she murmured, tears catching the amber light of the lantern. “If Mrs. Cruz discovers I’ve been coming down here, she’ll throw me out into the hurricane tonight. And I don't know where to go. My husband is gone, my debts are piling up, and I’m so terrified I won't be able to protect my baby.”
She gently set the bowl aside, taking a cotton pad soaked in fragrant rosewater to wipe the dust and fatigue from his cheeks.
“They think you’re nothing, and they treat me like dirt,” Sofia whispered, her voice cracking. “But you and I... we’re going to get through this. I promise.”
Suddenly, as her fingertips brushed against his cold knuckles, a startling sound echoed through the silent vault.
Clack.
Christian Senior’s left index finger had struck the rusted metal armrest with sharp, deliberate force.
Sofia gasped, pulling her hands back in sheer disbelief. She stared down at his hand, her heart hammering against her ribs. For eight long years, the entire household staff had sworn the old Don was completely brain-dead, unresponsive, and trapped in a vegetative void.
Yet here, right before her eyes, his hand had moved in direct response to her voice.
Sofia fell to her knees beside his wheelchair, tears of awe spilling down her cheeks as she grasped his cold, calloused fingers.
“John... can you hear me?” she whispered breathlessly.

Christian Senior could not speak, but as his dark eyes locked onto hers, every ounce of his legendary, ruthless will blazed with a terrifying, unyielding fire.
The king was waking up.
