Chapter 12 - A Sanctuary in the East PenthouseBy late December, the transformation of our lives was complete.

The private master suite on the top floor of Vance Tower had become a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and light.
The floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the sparkling waters of the harbor, while fresh bouquets of white hydrangeas and fragrant magnolias adorned every table.
Clara had completed her first semester as Chief Counsel, her legal strategies celebrated across the international maritime bar, surrounded by a team of brilliant young attorneys who visited the penthouse every week to review treaties.
And every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM, without fail, the long mahogany dining table at the estate was filled with family.
Don Salvatore Falcone would sit at the head of the table, laughing as he carved the prime rib, while Mrs. Gable brought platters of handmade pasta and warm sourdough bread from the kitchen.
One sunny Saturday afternoon in January, the winter air was crisp, carrying the clean scent of ocean salt and burning cedar.
Clara walked along the private master terrace overlooking the water, wearing an ivory cashmere sweater and tailored dark trousers, her dark hair dancing in the breeze.
Julian stood by the stone balustrade, wearing an open-collared navy wool coat, watching the cargo freighters glide across the harbor channel.
When he heard her footsteps on the flagstones, he turned around.
His face lit up with that rare, breathtaking smile that always made her heart race.
He walked across the terrace to meet her, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her gently against his solid, warm chest.
He buried his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply.
“Vanilla, ocean salt, and clean winter rain,” he murmured against his skin, sending a delicious shiver down her spine. “The only scent I ever want to come home to.”
Clara leaned back against his arm, smiling up into his soulful gray eyes.
“The foundation approved one hundred new educational grants for dockworkers' children this morning, Julian,” she whispered.
“And the new container terminal opened without a single hour of delay,” Julian smiled against her cheek. “All thanks to our Chief Counsel.”
“All thanks to a man who keeps his promises,” she replied, tracing the rugged line of his jaw.
Julian looked down at her, his expression shifting into a register of profound, breathtaking seriousness that made her pulse jump.
“Clara,” he said softly.
“Yes, Julian?”

He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his grandfather, sliding the chain into her palm.
“Our family is whole, Clara. The shadows will never touch us again.”
