Chapter 9 - The Broken Pinstripe SuitJulian didn’t hesitate.

He dropped onto one knee on the wooden planks of the pier, surrounded by the crying of the gulls and the gentle lapping of the tide against the pilings.

He opened the velvet box.

Resting inside was not a commercial diamond bought from a retail catalog.

Inside sat an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, six-carat cushion-cut royal blue sapphire cradled by two delicate anchors carved from white gold—the historic engagement ring of his mother, Donna Maria Vance, which had been locked in the family vault for twenty-five years, waiting for the woman who would bring honor back to their name.

“Clara Reed,” Julian began, his deep baritone carrying an emotional tremor that shook her entire being.

“Two weeks ago, you stepped between my pen and an empire, fighting through fear without ever losing your dignity. You were surrounded by wealth, arrogance, and ruthless deceit, yet you never let this world tarnish the pure gold of your spirit.”

He took her right hand into his massive, warm palm, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.

“You stood before forty armed men and spoke the truth when everyone else was silent. You protected my family’s name, you brought light into a house of shadows, and you taught me what true partnership really means.”

He lifted the sapphire ring, holding it poised before her trembling finger.

“Clara Reed, will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my fleet?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over Clara’s lashes, hot against her cheeks.

“Yes,” she choked out through her laughter, throwing her arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. “Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!”

Julian swept her up into his arms, lifting her off the pier, spinning her beneath the vast autumn sky before bringing his lips down onto mine in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed our destiny forever.

He slid the sapphire ring onto her finger.

It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the New York sun.

Don Salvatore Falcone and Frank cheered loudly from the terrace above, raising their coffee cups in the air, while the steam whistles from three idling tugboats blasted across the bay in a synchronized, triumphant chorus.
