Chapter 8 - The Interrogation in the Private StudyTwo weeks later, the transformation of their lives was complete.

Clara’s mother had been transferred to a state-of-the-art private recovery suite in the east wing of the Vance seaside estate in Oyster Bay, her medical needs fully endowed in perpetuity under the care of the country’s top neurological specialists.

The old tenement in Brooklyn had been sold, replaced by a historic three-story brownstone on Brooklyn Heights overlooking the water.

Under Clara’s direction, the Captain Thomas Reed Memorial Fund opened four free legal advocacy and safety clinics across the ports of New York, Boston, and Portland, providing free representation for injured longshoremen and dock families facing corporate negligence.

Down at the deep-water shipping terminals, the fifty-two newly acquired Baltic freighters were rechristened under the American flag, their hulls retrofitted with advanced automated safety bulkheads, turning the fleet into the safest, most efficient shipping line on the Atlantic.

One sunny Saturday afternoon in late October, the autumn air was crisp and clean, carrying the fresh scent of ocean salt and burning oak leaves.

Clara walked along the private stone pier of the Oyster Bay estate, wearing a tailored navy coat, watching the cargo freighters glide across the blue waters of Long Island Sound.

Footsteps sounded softly on the wooden planks behind her.

Julian walked up beside her, wearing an open-collared charcoal wool coat, his hands in his pockets.

He stopped, looking out over the water, then turned his gaze down to her.

“The first refurbished freighter cleared the breakwater this morning, Clara,” Julian said softly.

“Which one?” she asked, looking up at him.

Julian smiled—that rare, breathtaking smile that completely transformed his hard, dangerous features into something magnificent.

He reached into his pocket and produced an antique brass telescope.

He extended the brass tubes, handing it to her.

Clara lifted the glass to her eye, focusing across the harbor basin toward the massive, gleaming white container ship heading out toward the open Atlantic.

Painted across the bow in bold, gleaming gold letters was her father’s name:

THE CAPTAIN THOMAS REED — SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS.

Tears of pure, unadulterated peace spilled over Clara’s lashes, hot and fast against her cheeks.

“You named the flagship after my father, Julian?” she whispered, lowering the glass.

“The man who taught my Chief Counsel how to read the truth gave this family its future, Clara,” Julian murmured, his baritone vibrating with deep, unshakeable devotion. “His name will stand over this water for as long as our ships sail the earth.”

He stepped closer, wrapping his strong arm around her waist, pulling her gently against his solid, warm chest.

Clara rested her head against his shoulder, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart against her cheek, the salt wind rustling her hair.

Julian reached into his coat pocket and produced an antique velvet jeweler’s box lined with white silk.

My heart began to hammer against my ribs like a trapped bird.
