Chapter 5 - A Captain’s Daughter in the BoardroomFor the next four hours, while the rest of Manhattan slept beneath a blanket of cold October mist, the private study of the Harbor Club was transformed into a tactical command center.

Clara sat at the massive mahogany desk, her sleeves rolled to her elbows, an antique fountain pen in her right hand, dissecting the contract line by line.
Beside her sat Julian Vance, listening with unblinking, total focus as she peeled away five months of corporate deceit.
“Trap number two is in Section 84,” Clara explained, highlighting three lines of dense text in red ink. “The consortium agrees to transfer forty-two European terminal operating licenses. But under the 2024 European Union Environmental Port Directive, thirty-six of those licenses require certified hydrogen-scrubbed dock facilities by the end of next month.”
She looked up at Julian.
“None of the Baltic terminals have broken ground on those facilities. The moment you assume operational control, the regional port authorities in Hamburg and Rotterdam will levy ninety-two million dollars in non-compliance fines every thirty days. The seller has structured the closing date specifically so that the regulatory deadline falls on your ledger, not theirs.”
Julian’s eyes darkened with cold fury. “And the third trap?”
“The golden share in the salvage covenant,” Clara said, turning to Appendix K. “In the event of an offshore catastrophic grounding, the salvage rights are not awarded to the lowest commercial bidder. They are assigned exclusively to a maritime salvage entity called North Sea Recovery Ltd.”
She met his gaze directly.
“North Sea Recovery is ninety-percent owned by the board members of the Baltic Consortium. If your ships take on water, they will charge you three hundred percent of the cargo's value just to tow the hulls into drydock. They were planning to bleed your syndicate dry from both ends.”
Julian stood up, walking to the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the dark waters of New York Harbor.
The first pale ribbons of dawn were beginning to streak the Atlantic horizon in shades of rose and steel.
The double doors clicked open.
Frank stepped into the study, holding an encrypted military tablet displaying live bank records.
“We cracked Sterling’s Park Avenue safe, Don Julian,” Frank reported, his face grim. “Found forty million dollars in unmanifested Swiss bearer bonds, along with an executed consultancy agreement with the Baltic Consortium signed three weeks ago. Sterling was receiving an eight-percent kickback on the entire purchase price to deliver the signature tonight.”
Julian took the tablet, his eyes scanning the wire confirmations with ruthless speed.
“Are the eight vice presidents still waiting in the grand dining room, Frank?”
“Yes, boss. They've been sitting under armed guard since midnight.”
Julian turned toward Clara.

He offered his right arm with the unhurried, royal authority of a sovereign leading an empress to her throne.
“Miss Reed,” Julian said softly. “Bring your red pen. It's time to teach my executive board how to negotiate.”
