Chapter 7 - A Scent of Salt Water and Burning PaperBy 11:00 AM, the legal and financial reorganization of the Baltic Freight Consortium was unfolding across two continents with historic precision.

Inside the federal executive building on Foley Square, Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance—Julian’s second cousin—formally unsealed the grand jury indictments against Richard Sterling and the six European directors who had orchestrated the sinking of the Baltic Sovereign.
Richard Sterling was denied bail and remanded to maximum security at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, facing consecutive life terms for maritime piracy, corporate fraud, and twelve counts of capital manslaughter.
The offshore accounts in Grand Cayman were frozen by international decree, with eighty million dollars in recovered assets transferred directly into the newly chartered Captain Thomas Reed Memorial Fund for Maritime Families.
Back at the Harbor Club, the private study was quiet, bathed in the warm, golden light of the midday sun reflecting off the water.
Clara sat in the leather armchair beside the hearth, holding a warm cup of herbal tea that Mrs. Gable had prepared with a motherly smile.
Her worn black server's uniform had been replaced with an elegant cream cashmere sweater and tailored navy trousers.
Pinned proudly over her heart was her father’s bronze anchor brooch, polished until it gleamed like pure gold.
The double doors opened softly.
Julian Vance walked into the room.
He had removed his suit jacket and tie, wearing an unbuttoned white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up over his corded, scarred forearms.
In his right hand, he carried an antique leather portfolio stamped with the golden seal of the Vance Maritime Syndicate.
He sat on the leather ottoman opposite her, placing the portfolio onto her lap.
“What is this, Mr. Vance?” Clara asked softly, looking down at the parchment.
“Open it, Clara,” he smiled gently.
Clara opened the folder.
Inside lay an official executive decree ratified by the Syndicate Board of Directors:
APPOINTMENT OF CLARA REED, ESQ. — CHIEF MARITIME COUNSEL AND EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE VANCE FLEET.
Attached to the decree was a stock certificate transferring five percent of the entire seventy-two-vessel maritime conglomerate into her name—an unencumbered holding worth over sixty million dollars.
Tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude blurred Clara’s vision, hot against her eyelashes.
“Julian... sixty million dollars? Chief Counsel? I haven't even taken the bar exam yet!”
Julian reached forward, his large, calloused hand gently closing over hers where it rested on the stock certificate.
His touch was warm, solid, and filled with an intensity that took the breath straight out of her lungs.
“The dean of Columbia Law School delivered your diploma to my office twenty minutes ago, Clara,” Julian murmured, his deep baritone rumbling with emotion. “Graduated with highest honors, class of 2026. The state bar association has already waived your examination requirement based on your forensic recovery of the Baltic assets.”

He leaned closer, his slate-gray eyes searching hers with fierce, unyielding devotion.
“You saved my fleet from destruction, Clara. You gave twelve drowned sailors their honor back. In this house, courage is paid in gold, and truth is answered with an empire.”
