Chapter 10 - The Medical Report That Never VanishedThe silence inside the Metropolitan Club was so profound that the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the foyer sounded like artillery fire.

Julian Delacroix stared at the dossier on the linen tablecloth as if it were a coiled viper.
“This is preposterous!” Giselle shrieked, stepping forward, her emerald gown hissing against the floor. “Dante, you have lost your mind! You bring an unhinged county hospital worker to our engagement dinner to peddle twenty-year-old union conspiracies?”
She pointed a trembling, diamond-tipped finger at Elena.
“She’s an opportunist! A street tramp trying to extort our families ahead of the wedding!”
Dante didn’t raise his voice. He took half a step forward, and the sheer malice radiating from his obsidian eyes made Giselle flinch backward until her hip struck the back of her chair.
“Miss Vance is the woman who saved my life on Fourteenth Street last November, Giselle,” Dante whispered, each syllable sharp enough to shave skin. “The night your father’s sniper put two hollow-point rounds through my ribs.”
A collective shudder ran through the sixty syndicate bosses.
Three senior capos from Brooklyn immediately stood up, their chairs scraping loudly against the floor, their hands dropping beneath their jackets.
“Is this true, Julian?” Don Carmine Falcone, the oldest capo in the room, growled in a voice thick with menace. “Did you order a hit on the Don of the Five Families while negotiating a peace charter?”
Julian swallowed hard, sweat beading across his forehead beneath the chandelier heat.
“It’s a lie! Falcone, listen to me! Dante is manufacturing evidence to seize our northern shipping routes! He has no proof!”
Dante gestured to Marco, who stood near the entrance holding a digital tablet connected to the ballroom’s integrated projection screens.
With a single tap on the screen, the three massive displays overhead lit up.
The video feed showed Victor, sitting in a federal interrogation room in lower Manhattan, speaking directly into the camera:
“Julian Delacroix paid me five hundred thousand dollars in cash to eliminate Dante Caruso on Fourteenth Street. When that failed, Giselle ordered me to execute Dr. Elena Vance at Bellevue Hospital last night. We used custom Swedish submachine guns registered to the Montreal dock authority...”
Giselle covered her mouth, a choked sob of pure terror escaping her throat.
Elena stepped up to the table, opening the leather dossier to the third page.
“And here is the original toxicological analysis from the Bellevue archives, dated yesterday evening,” Elena announced, her voice ringing with unimpeachable clinical authority. “The driver of the SUV that ambushed us on First Avenue was identified as Laurent Mercier—Julian Delacroix’s private chauffeur for twelve years.”
She looked directly into Julian’s hollow, terrified eyes.
“You didn't just try to assassinate Dante, Mr. Delacroix. You used forged customs seals to smuggle five tons of synthetic fentanyl precursors through the Brooklyn docks last Tuesday—cargo that would have poisoned thousands of children across this city.”
Don Carmine Falcone slammed his fist onto the table with a concussive roar that shook the crystal pendants overhead.

“Treason!” Falcone bellowed. “Julian Delacroix has broken the blood oath of the Five Families!”
Across the room, sixty syndicate leaders stood as one, drawing their sidearms and training them directly onto Julian Delacroix and his security detail.
