Chapter 7 - The Bloodline of BellevueBy 6:00 AM, the first pale rays of dawn began to pierce the rain clouds over the East River.

Elena sat on the deep leather sofa in the penthouse library, wearing a soft gray cashmere sweater and dark trousers that Dante’s staff had provided. Her hospital scrubs had been laundered and pressed, but Dante had forbidden her from changing back into them.
“You’re not going to Bellevue today, Elena,” Dante said, walking into the room carrying a tray with two cups of black coffee and fresh pastries.
“Dante, my residency director will report me as AWOL,” she argued, though the smell of hot coffee made her stomach rumble with intense hunger. “I can’t just disappear from the hospital without administrative leave.”
“Your residency director is Dr. Arthur Pendelton,” Dante said smoothly, setting the tray on the coffee table. “A man whose private mortgage on his Hamptons estate is held by Caruso Financial Holdings. He received a call thirty minutes ago informing him that you have been granted an indefinite research sabbatical with full pay.”
Elena stared at him in disbelief. “You have your hooks in the hospital administration too?”
“I have my hooks in everything that ensures your safety,” he replied without hesitation.
He sat beside her, handing her a warm porcelain mug.
“Drink. You need your strength for tonight.”
“What happens tonight?” she asked, taking a sip of the rich, dark roast.
“Tonight, the Five Families convene at the Metropolitan Club for the pre-gala alliance banquet,” Dante said, his expression hardening into stone. “Julian Delacroix is flying in from Montreal on his private jet. He believes he is attending a coronation where his daughter will become the Donna of the Caruso syndicate.”
Elena set her cup down, her pulse accelerating.
“And what is actually going to happen?”
“An execution,” Dante answered calmly. “Not with bullets, Elena. With the law. And with the truth.”
He leaned closer, his eyes searching hers with profound intensity.
“Julian Delacroix built his entire empire on forged maritime licenses and stolen union pensions. The evidence in that safe is enough to put him and Giselle in federal penitentiaries for three lifetimes. But for the Five Families to accept the dissolution of our alliance without plunging this city into a bloody civil war, the evidence must be presented by someone whose integrity cannot be bought.”
Elena understood immediately. Her breath caught in her throat.
“You want me to stand before the Five Families.”
“I want Thomas Vance’s daughter to look Julian Delacroix in the eye and read the coroner’s report he thought was buried twenty years ago,” Dante said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakable conviction. “You are the only person in this state whose hands have never been stained by syndicate blood. When you speak, the council will listen.”
Elena looked at her hands—hands that had stitched severed arteries, cracked chests, and fought death on cold hospital linoleum.
For years, she had avoided the shadows of the city, believing she could heal the world by staying inside the sterile walls of the emergency room. But now she realized that some wounds couldn't be healed with a scalpel.
Some infections had to be burned out at the root.
“I’ll do it,” Elena said firmly, her voice steady and clear. “For my father. And for Sofia.”

A brilliant, breathtaking smile broke across Dante’s rugged face—a smile of pure, unadulterated admiration that made her heart leap against her ribs.
“That’s my girl,” Dante whispered.
