Chapter 12 - A Father's Secret OathAt 2:00 AM, the armored Maybach pulled up to the quiet residential curb outside a historic brownstone in Brooklyn Heights.

The storm had completely passed, leaving the night sky clear, crisp, and sparkling with autumn stars.

Dante walked Elena up the brownstone steps, his hand resting gently against the small of her back. The house had belonged to her parents, maintained by a small family trust that she had struggled to keep afloat on her resident’s salary.

Elena turned at the front door, looking up into Dante’s handsome, scarred face.

He had removed his tie, the top buttons of his black shirt open, the exhaustion of the last forty-eight hours finally showing in the faint lines around his eyes.

“You didn't have to walk me to the door, Dante,” she said, a soft smile touching her lips.

“I promised Thomas Vance I would protect you, Elena,” Dante replied, his deep voice rich with emotion. “I don't leave my promises halfway down the street.”

He reached into his pocket and produced a small, velvet jeweler’s box.

Elena’s heart began to hammer against her ribs. “Dante... what is that?”

He opened the box.

Inside lay an antique silver pocket watch, its crystal face uncracked, its mechanical movement ticking with steady, rhythmic precision. Engraved on the back casing was a caduceus surrounded by an anchor, alongside the initials T.V.—Thomas Vance.

Elena covered her mouth with trembling fingers, tears welling in her eyes.

“My father’s watch...” she choked out. “The union gave it to him when he became chief organizer. We had to pawn it when my mother fell ill fifteen years ago.”

“I tracked it down to an estate collector in Chicago three months ago,” Dante said softly, taking her hand and placing the heavy silver timepiece into her palm. “A healer should always know what time it is, Elena. Especially when she has an entire city to take care of.”

Elena closed her fingers around the cool silver, feeling the pulse of her father’s memory beating in her hand.

She stepped closer to Dante, resting her hands against the lapels of his coat.

“Why did you do all this, Dante?” she whispered, looking deep into his dark, soulful eyes. “You could have simply taken the Delacroix docks for yourself. You didn't need to clear my father’s name. You didn't need to buy back his watch.”

Dante reached up, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing the curve of her jawline.

“Because in that alley on Fourteenth Street, Elena,” Dante murmured, his voice dropping into a tender, intimate register, “you didn't just save my life. You reminded me that I had a soul worth saving.”

His lips lowered, brushing against hers in a gentle, questioning contact that sent a jolt of pure, breathless electricity through her entire being.

Elena didn't pull away. She leaned into the embrace, her arms winding around his neck, meeting his lips in a deep, passionate kiss that washed away twenty years of grief, fear, and loneliness.

When he finally pulled back, his gray eyes were blazing with unmistakable, eternal devotion.

“Get some sleep, Doctor,” Dante whispered against her lips. “Tomorrow, we begin our new life.”
