Chapter 14 - The Ring of Black ObsidianTwo weeks later, the spring thaw had begun to melt the snow across Central Park.

Dante brought Elena to the Conservatory Garden at the northern end of the park—a quiet, private sanctuary surrounded by blooming snowdrops and ancient wrought-iron pergolas.

The park was peaceful, devoid of paparazzi or security details, save for Marco watching discreetly from the avenue gates three hundred yards away.

They walked hand in hand along the stone path, the cool afternoon breeze carrying the promise of new life.

Dante stopped beneath a canopy of wisteria vines that were just beginning to bud.

He turned to face her, taking both of her hands into his.

“Elena,” he began, his deep voice carrying a quiet, reverent tremor that she had never heard before.

“Yes, Dante?”

“For twelve years, I walked through this city as a ghost,” Dante said, looking deep into her hazel eyes. “I thought my duty was to be an executioner, an iron wall that kept my family safe through blood and fear. I believed love was a luxury reserved for men who didn't carry targets on their backs.”

He reached into his pocket and retrieved an antique velvet box.

He dropped onto one knee on the flagstone path.

Elena’s hands flew to her mouth, tears springing instantly to her eyes as her pulse hammered against her throat.

Dante opened the box.

Resting inside was a magnificent ring of hand-forged platinum, featuring a flawless, brilliant-cut three-carat diamond cradled by two delicate leaves of carved black obsidian—the stone of protection, truth, and eternal loyalty.

“You saved my life with wire-cutters and dirty towels, Elena,” Dante said, his voice ringing with pure, unyielding devotion. “You healed my body, but more than that, you healed the darkness in my soul. You showed me that an empire without justice is just an open grave.”

He looked up at her, all the terrifying power of the mafia kingpin dissolving into the vulnerable heart of a man in love.

“Dr. Elena Vance, will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the queen of my life?”

Tears of pure, radiant joy spilled down Elena’s cheeks, catching the afternoon sunlight.

“Yes,” she choked out through her laughter, throwing her arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. “Yes, Dante! A thousand times yes!”

Dante swept her off her feet, his arms wrapping around her waist, spinning her in the sunlit garden before bringing his lips down onto hers in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed their souls together forever.

He slid the ring onto her finger. It fit as if it had been forged for her hand since the dawn of time.
