Chapter 11 - Mama Rosa’s Testimony

Three days later, the grand banquet hall of the Gold Coast mansion was once again filled with thirty guests beneath the sparkling crystal chandeliers.

The ruined twelve-thousand-dollar French engagement cake was long gone, the marble floors scrubbed until they gleamed like mirrors.

In its place, at the center of the head table, sat three freshly baked, golden-brown homemade apple pies, their sweet, cinnamon-laced aroma filling the cavernous room with warmth and comfort.

Seated around the table were the seven elder capos of the Chicago Commission, dressed in formal dark suits, their faces solemn and respectful.

Seated at the right hand of Luca Moretti was seventy-eight-year-old Rosa Alvarez.

She wore a brand-new, beautifully tailored navy wool dress that Luca had personally commissioned from a boutique on Michigan Avenue, her silver hair pinned neatly, her eyes shining with quiet tears of joy.

Don Carmine Barzini stood up from his chair, raising a crystal goblet of vintage Barolo.

“Before this assembly,” Barzini spoke, his voice carrying the deep resonance of forty years of mafia history, “we formally record the final judgment of the High Commission.”

He looked at the official parchment scroll resting on the table.

“The Bellini syndicate has been dissolved permanently. All commercial docks, railway charters, and banking assets are hereby deeded unconditionally to the House of Moretti.”

Barzini turned his gaze toward the elderly woman seated beside Luca.

“And to Mrs. Rosa Alvarez, the commission awards the historic title of *Madre Onoraria*—Honorary Matriarch of the Chicago Families. No man shall ever speak to her without bowing his head, and no debt shall ever be collected from her bloodline for seven generations.”

The seven elder capos stood as one, raising their glasses high in a thunderous, unanimous toast:

“Salute, Mama Rosa!”

Rosa dabbed her eyes with a lace handkerchief, her hands trembling as she looked at the powerful men bowing before her.

“Thank you, gentlemen,” Rosa said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent hall. “Arthur and Maria always said that respect is the only currency that never rustles in the wind. Treat your people with honor, and your house will never fall.”

Luca smiled warmly, kissing Rosa’s cheek, then turned his gaze toward me.

I sat on his left, dressed in an exquisite emerald-silk evening gown that matched the ancient ring resting in my coat pocket, my father David sitting proudly beside me, looking healthy and dignified in a dark tailored suit.

Luca stood up, tapping his water glass with a silver fork.

The room quieted instantly.

“There is one final matter of estate governance that must be resolved tonight,” Luca announced, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my pulse race.

He walked around the table until he stopped directly behind my chair.

He reached into his breast pocket and produced the antique velvet jeweler’s box.

He opened it.

The massive, flawless emerald ring of Maria Moretti glittered beneath the chandeliers, radiating a deep, oceanic green light that captivated every eye in the room.

Luca dropped onto one knee upon the marble floor beside my chair.

My father smiled, tears of pride shining in his eyes. Rosa clapped her hands together with radiant joy, and the hardened capos along the table watched in stunned, reverent silence.

Luca took my trembling left hand into his large, warm fingers.

“Emma Reed,” Luca spoke, his voice vibrating with an emotion so pure, so profound, that it shook the very foundations of the room.

“You walked into this house with a feather duster and left carrying the soul of my family. You refused to bow to a lie when everyone else was looking at their silverware. You gave me back my mother, you saved my life, and you showed me what true loyalty looks like.”

He lifted the emerald ring.

“Will you marry me, Emma? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the sovereign donna of the Moretti Empire?”

Tears of boundless, overwhelming happiness poured down my cheeks.

I slipped out of my chair, dropping to my knees on the marble beside him, throwing my arms around his broad shoulders, burying my face into his neck.

“Yes, Luca!” I sobbed with all the love in my heart. “Yes! A thousand times, yes!”

Luca slid the magnificent emerald onto my finger—a flawless, perfect fit—and pulled me into a breathtaking, passionate kiss as the entire room erupted into a standing ovation that shook the crystal chandeliers.
