Chapter 15 - The New Donna of Chicago

The bells of the historic Holy Name Cathedral in downtown Chicago rang out in a joyous, triumphant chorus that echoed across the skyscrapers and the lakefront.

It was our wedding day.

Over five hundred guests filled the towering stone cathedral—governors, international trade ambassadors, union leaders, neighborhood grandmothers from Pilsen, and every member of the domestic staff from the Gold Coast estate, who occupied the front pews of honor.

Walking down the long marble aisle on the proud, steady arm of my father, I wore an exquisite, hand-stitched ivory silk gown that cascaded in soft folds around my feet.

Draped over my head was Maria Moretti’s antique Venetian lace veil, and sparkling on my left hand was the magnificent emerald ring.

At the altar stood Luca Moretti.

He looked breathtakingly handsome in a custom bespoke black tuxedo, his broad shoulders squared, his dark eyes watching me approach with a look of reverence and adoration so intense it made my heart soar.

Standing beside him as his best man was Marco, sharp and proud in his formal suit.

And sitting in the seat of highest honor in the front pew, dressed in royal blue velvet, was Mama Rosa Alvarez.

When my father placed my hand into Luca’s, Luca leaned down and whispered against my ear with a voice thick with emotion:

“You are my home, Emma. Today, tomorrow, and for all eternity.”

“And you are mine, Luca,” I whispered back with a radiant smile.

We exchanged our vows before Archbishop Rossi, sealing our sacred union with a kiss that brought the entire five hundred guests to their feet in a thunderous, standing ovation that shook the stained-glass windows of the cathedral.

That evening, the grand wedding reception at the Gold Coast mansion was a celebration unlike anything the city had ever witnessed.

There were no whispered betrayals, no concealed daggers, and no fear.

The crystal chandeliers glittered over a ballroom filled with glorious music, joyous laughter, clinking glasses, and the irresistible, heavenly aroma of fresh homemade apple pie.

Beneath the central chandelier, Luca and I shared our first dance as husband and wife to a sweeping Italian waltz played by a full orchestra.

He held me close against his chest, his strong hand warm and possessive on the small of my back, spinning me across the marble floor where, two months earlier, an engagement cake had been shattered.

“Are you happy, Donna Moretti?” Luca murmured, his lips brushing against my temple.

I looked up into the dark, loving eyes of the man who had torn down an empire of vipers to protect me and my family.

“I have never been happier, Luca,” I smiled, resting my cheek against his lapel. “The housekeeper is gone. And our house is finally whole.”

Across the room, my father was laughing with Don Barzini by the fireplace, while Rosa danced with Marco, surrounded by cheering guests.

We stood together in the brilliant light of our home, knowing that our foundation was built on truth, loyalty, and an unbreakable love that no syndicate, no bullet, and no storm could ever tear apart.

The maid had become the queen, the humble housekeeper had reclaimed her rightful place of honor, and the House of Moretti ruled with light and justice forever.
