Chapter 14 - The Mother’s Emerald Ring

The night before our wedding, Rosa Alvarez called me into the private sitting room of the Gold Coast estate.

The room was lit by the soft glow of the fireplace, smelling of dried lavender and fresh mint.

Rosa sat in a plush armchair, holding an antique carved wooden box lined with white silk.

“Come sit with me, Emma,” Rosa said, patting the velvet footstool beside her knee.

I walked over and sat down, looking up at the woman who had become my beloved grandmother.

Rosa opened the box.

Inside rested an exquisite, hand-stitched bridal veil of antique Venetian lace, embroidered with delicate patterns of olive branches and blooming orange blossoms.

“Maria wore this veil on the day she married Arthur in 1985,” Rosa whispered, her fingers gently stroking the delicate lace. “She told me: ‘Rosa, keep this safe. The woman who wears this veil must not be chosen for her dowry or her father’s power. She must be chosen because she brings peace to my son’s restless heart.’”

Rosa lifted the veil, draping it gently across my lap.

“You are that woman, Emma,” Rosa said, her eyes shining with holy pride. “You brought the light back into this house. Maria is smiling down upon you tonight.”

Tears of sacred joy touched my eyes as I hugged the elderly woman, resting my head against her shoulder.

“Thank you, Mama Rosa,” I whispered. “I will honor this family for as long as I live.”
