Chapter 11 - Shadows from the Past

The romantic stillness of the veranda was abruptly broken by the discreet vibration of Julian’s encrypted satellite phone. He pulled the device from his tuxedo pocket, glanced at the encrypted alphanumeric display, and his expression instantly hardened back into the ruthless granite of a syndicate boss. "What is it?" I asked, sensing the sudden shift in atmosphere. Julian slipped the phone away, his jaw clenching tightly. "A localized breach at the secondary shipping terminal in Biloxi. Petrov’s remaining loyalists are trying to set fire to our primary container yards before fleeing federal jurisdiction." My heart skipped a beat. Even though the main conspiracy had collapsed, desperate men backed into a corner were dangerous. "You have to go," I said firmly. Julian looked down at me, hesitation flickering across his features for the first time since I had met him. "I am not leaving you here unprotected. I'm having Leo escort you back to the Garden District estate immediately." Before I could argue, Leo appeared through the glass doors, looking serious and alert, holding his car keys ready. "The convoy is secured at the lower exit, Julian," Leo reported rapidly. "Federal agents are already moving toward the Biloxi docks, but we need to intercept their logistics truck before they ignite the fuel reserves." Julian looked deep into my eyes, placing his hands gently on my shoulders. "Stay inside the secure perimeter of the estate tonight, Elena. When I return tomorrow morning, there is something vital I need to tell you." I nodded, watching as he turned and strode swiftly toward the waiting black SUVs, a modern-day titan marching directly into the storm to protect his legacy.
