Chapter 9 - The Red Dress and the Grand Ballroom

The annual New Orleans Maritime Gala was the most exclusive social event of the Gulf Coast, a glittering gathering of billionaire tycoons, international diplomats, and elite magnates. Weeks after the downfall of Bianca Moretti and Judge Harrison, the ballroom of the grand Plaza Hotel shimmered with crystal chandeliers, champagne fountains, and whispered gossip about the new power dynamic at Vance Maritime. When the massive double doors swung open, all conversation instantly ceased. Julian Vance entered the grand ballroom, immaculate in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, his arm linked securely with mine. I wore a stunning, floor-length crimson silk gown custom-crafted by the very French Quarter atelier that had outfitted me weeks prior, accented with subtle diamond drop earrings that caught the glittering overhead light. Heads turned in stunned disbelief; the former service maid who had once wiped spilled Barolo wine off a stained apron now glided effortlessly beside the most feared and respected titan in the South. Leo followed closely behind, smiling warmly and nodding to prominent city commissioners who rushed forward to offer their respects. Julian led me directly to the head table, pulling out my velvet chair with quiet, old-world chivalry. As we seated ourselves beneath the glowing chandeliers, foreign dignitaries and shipping magnates queued up to congratulate Julian on his sweeping corporate victories—and to catch a glimpse of the brilliant bilingual strategist who had saved the dynasty from internal ruin. Julian poured a glass of vintage champagne, handed it to me, and raised his own crystal flute. "To new beginnings, Elena," he murmured softly, his slate-gray eyes locking onto mine with a depth of emotion that made my breath catch in my throat.
