Chapter 8 - Dawn Raids and Falling Dominos

Before the first rays of sunlight hit the Mississippi River, federal marshals, accompanied by Julian’s private security enforcers, executed simultaneous raids across the French Quarter and the Garden District. Judge Harrison was intercepted attempting to board a private charter flight out of Lakefront Airport, carrying four encrypted hard drives and two million dollars in bearer bonds supplied by Petrov’s syndicate. The takedown was swift, clinical, and absolute. When the morning news broadcasts flashed footage of the corrupt magistrate being led away in handcuffs, the entire corporate and criminal underworld of New Orleans realized that the Vance empire was untouchable. Inside the executive suite of the Vance Tower, the morning papers lay spread across the mahogany table, detailing the collapse of the conspiracy. Leo walked in carrying a tray of fresh pastries and espresso, looking more relaxed than I had seen him in months. "The board of commissioners just voted unanimously to restore full perpetual operating rights to our family at Berth 4," Leo announced triumphantly, raising his espresso cup. "And the federal prosecutor has formally dropped all preliminary inquiries into our corporate restructuring." Julian walked out of his private inner office, dressed in a flawless charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly swept back. He looked at Leo, then turned his gaze toward me as I stood by the window organizing the final compliance reports. "Good work, both of you," Julian said smoothly. He walked over, stopping just inches away from me. The proximity sent a sudden, electric jolt through my veins. He reached out, gently adjusting the lapel of my jacket. "You have earned a respite, Elena. Tonight, the annual Maritime Gala is taking place at the Plaza Hotel—and you are attending as my official corporate guest."
