Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary Beneath the Garden District

As the flashing red lights of federal and private security vehicles illuminated the wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate, Julian ordered his men to relocate us to the secure subterranean vault beneath the main manor. I was escorted down a hidden stone staircase alongside Leo, while Bianca and her father were detained in the upper west wing under heavy guard. The underground level was a fortress of reinforced concrete, housing centuries of maritime archives, encrypted communication arrays, and rows of vintage oak wine casks. Julian walked in last, his midnight-black suit jacket removed, revealing the intricate, dark maritime tattoos creeping up his forearms and disappearing beneath the cuffs of his crisp white shirt. He poured himself a glass of amber whiskey before turning his penetrating gaze toward me. "Elena Castiglione," he said, his deep baritone echoing off the stone walls. "You possess a dangerous tongue, and an even more dangerous ear." I stood straight, holding my chin high despite my trembling hands and the lingering stain of Barolo wine on my chest. "I only spoke the truth, Mr. Vance. Silence in the face of murder makes an accomplice." A rare, faint ghost of a smile touched the corner of Julian’s lips before vanishing into hard lines. He turned to Leo, instructing him to secure the digital backups of the shipyard blueprints while he addressed my future. Instead of dismissing me or silencing me as ordinary crime bosses might, Julian placed a heavy envelope filled with hazard compensation and a permanent employment contract on the oak desk. But before I could reach for it, he locked his slate-gray eyes onto mine and uttered words that changed my trajectory forever: "You are no longer a banquet maid, Elena. Starting tomorrow, you are my chief corporate translator and confidential attaché—and you will need a wardrobe upgrade before sunrise."
