Chapter 10 - SHADOWS OF THE UNDERWORLD CONVERGE

The private VIP wing of St. Vincent's Hospital was an oasis of calm compared to the media circus raging outside on the main streets. Armed Blackwell security guards stood discreetly at both ends of the sterile white hallway, their dark suits and quiet professionalism blending seamlessly into the hospital environment. When Damon and I stepped out of the private elevator, Dr. Vance was waiting for us with a reassuring smile. "Everything is completely secure, Mr. Blackwell, Miss Bennett," the doctor reported, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Your mother's post-surgery vitals are stable, and the specialist team confirmed that the procedure was a complete success." Tears of overwhelming relief welled in my eyes. I turned to Damon, unable to contain the gratitude flooding my chest. "Thank you," I choked out, my voice trembling. "Damon... thank you." It was the first time I had used his first name without his title attached, and the effect was immediate. His severe expression softened completely. He gently placed his hand on the small of my back, guiding me toward my mother's room. Through the large glass observation window, I saw my mother resting peacefully, her breathing steady, color returning to her cheeks for the first time in months. "You never have to thank me for protecting what is yours, Kate," he murmured, his voice husky and low, meant only for my ears. But before we could step inside, Marcus rushed down the hallway from the elevator bank, his phone pressed firmly to his ear. "Boss," Marcus interrupted urgently, stepping into our circle. "We have an urgent communication from the syndicate elders in New York. They heard about the purge of Caldwell's men. They are demanding an emergency summit at the downtown estate tonight." Damon's eyes flashed with dark fury. "Tell the elders my schedule is full," Damon snapped coldly. "Tell them if they want to speak with me, they can wait until I have ensured Miss Bennett's family is entirely secure." "No," I said softly, touching Damon's sleeve with my uninjured hand. "Go. Take care of your business. I'll stay here with my mother." Damon looked down at my hand resting on his sleeve, his jaw tightening. "I never leave my post, Kate. And you are my primary post."
