Chapter 15 - SUNRISE OVER A NEW BEGINNING

The sun crested over the shimmering expanse of Lake Michigan, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of amber, rose, and gold. The morning light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse suite, casting a warm, luminous glow across the hardwood floors. I stood on the private balcony wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, holding a steaming cup of coffee, watching the city wake up far below. Footsteps sounded softly behind me, followed by the familiar, comforting warmth of arms wrapping around my waist from behind. Damon rested his chin gently on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair. "What are you thinking about, Kate?" he asked softly, his deep voice vibrating against my back. I smiled, resting my hands over his. I thought back to eleven months of hiding in fear, the cold metal shelving in the dark storage room, the terrifying snap of bone, and the quiet, lethal voice that had asked for a name. I thought of the fifteen men who had vanished into smoke, the corrupt empire that had fallen to dust, and the mother now resting safely in a sunlit home. "I was thinking," I whispered, turning around in his embrace to look up into the eyes of the man who owned the city and my heart, "that fifteen men disappeared so we could find our happily ever after." Damon smiled, a bright, genuine expression that swept away every remaining shadow, and kissed me softly as the new day dawned. THE END.
