Chapter 6 - STEPPING INTO THE INNER SANCTUM WHERE SECRETS DIE

The private elevator chimed softly, signaling our arrival at the penthouse level of Blackwell Tower. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Yesterday, I was scrubbing baseboards on my hands and knees; today, I walked beside the most feared man in the Midwest as his executive assistant. The transition felt surreal, like stepping through a mirror into an alternate reality where rules bent at a single word. Damon pushed open the heavy oak doors to his private office, revealing a panoramic view of Lake Michigan sparkling under the morning sun. The room was vast, lined with mahogany bookshelves, antique globes, and minimalist modern art. "Your desk is here," Damon said, gesturing to a sleek walnut workstation positioned just outside his inner office doors. "You will manage my schedule, review incoming acquisitions, and handle all direct communications with our regional partners. Marcus has already transferred your personal belongings from your apartment to the secure residential quarters on the nineteenth floor." I stopped in my tracks, turning to face him. "My apartment? Mr. Blackwell, I can't just move into your building. That's entirely inappropriate—" "It is safe," he corrected smoothly, cutting me off before I could argue further. "Last night proved that your previous residence is vulnerable. Security is non-negotiable in my world, Kate. And you are my responsibility now." Before I could formulate a reply, the intercom on my new desk buzzed softly. I pressed the flashing button with my left hand. "Mr. Blackwell, Senator Caldwell is on line one," Marcus’s gravelly voice echoed through the speaker. "He says it's urgent." Damon’s eyes narrowed slightly, a dangerous spark flashing in their dark depths. He walked over, placed his large hand gently over mine on the desk, and pressed the speakerphone button himself. "Put him through, Marcus," Damon commanded softly, his voice a low rumble that promised absolute destruction. The line clicked, and the frantic, breathless voice of Senator Harrison Caldwell filled the silent office. "Damon! What kind of game are you playing? My security detail vanished into thin air, my son is missing, and your associates are occupying my downtown properties! Name your price, Blackwell! Just tell me what you want!" Damon leaned down toward the speaker, his lips parting into a chillingly polite smile. "Senator Caldwell," Damon purred, "you called the wrong man. You thought you could operate in my city with absolute impunity. But you made one critical error." "What error?" the senator shrieked, panic cracking his voice. "You breathed the same air as my people," Damon replied coldly. "And now, your time is up." With a sharp tap of his finger, Damon hung up the phone, turning to me with a calm, unbothered expression. "Now, Kate, let us review the morning briefings."
