Chapter 8 - HEALING HANDS AND A SHADOWY PAST REVEALED

The rain beat a steady rhythm against the massive glass windows of the penthouse office as I organized the digital schedules for the upcoming week. Working closely with Damon Blackwell was an education in absolute power and meticulous control. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. A single raised eyebrow from him caused seasoned corporate executives to stammer and fold during video conferences. "Kate." I looked up from my desk as Damon emerged from his inner office, rolling up his white dress shirt sleeves to reveal strong, lightly scarred forearms. "You've been staring at that monitor for three hours straight. Take a break. Come into my office." Hesitantly, I stood up and walked through the double mahogany doors. He gestured for me to sit in one of the leather armchairs by the private fireplace, where a low, comforting flame crackled. He poured two glasses of amber liquid into heavy crystal tumblers and handed one to me. "I'm not much of a drinker, Mr. Blackwell," I said honestly. "It's apple cider, Kate. Relax," he said with a faint, rare smile that completely transformed his severe features, making him look devastatingly handsome. I took a small sip, the sweet, warm spice calming my nerves. "You grew up in the city, didn't you?" he asked quietly, leaning back in his chair. "I read your background file thoroughly." "On the South Side," I answered, looking down into my glass. "My father was... well, he was a lot like the men you deal with every day, minus the wealth and the intelligence. He believed power came from fear. That's why I left home as soon as I could." Damon watched me closely, his dark eyes reflecting the flickering firelight. "And yet, you aren't afraid of me." "Who says I'm not?" I countered, a sudden surge of courage making me look directly into his eyes. "You exiled fifteen men and ruined a U.S. senator in less than twenty-four hours. Of course I'm afraid of you." Damon let out a low, rich chuckle—a sound that sent a strange, pleasant shiver down my spine. "Fear is a tool for my enemies, Kate. For you, I intend to be a shield." Before I could process the weight of his words, the secure phone on his desk chimed. Damon's expression instantly hardened back into the ruthless syndicate boss, but as he stood up to answer it, his hand gently brushed against my shoulder—a silent, lingering touch that promised our story was only just beginning.
