Chapter 3 - THE MIDNIGHT GATHERING

The private underground garage of the Blackwell estate was a cavernous tomb of polished concrete and imported European sports cars. By the time Damon escorted me down the private elevator, three black SUVs were idling near the exit, their engines purring with suppressed power. Marcus, Damon’s towering, silent head of security, stood waiting beside the door of the lead vehicle. His eyes flicked to my splinted arm—Damon had fashioned a temporary rigid support using a rolled-up architectural magazine and silk ribbon from my apron—and a dangerous glint flashed in Marcus's eyes. "Is everything prepared?" Damon asked, his voice cutting through the hum of the motors like a razor. "Fifteen men are currently stationed around the perimeter and inside the east wing, sir, exactly as scheduled for the security rotation," Marcus reported crisply. "They report directly to Caldwell's private detail." Damon opened the door of the Mercedes for me, his hand shielding my head as I slid into the supple leather seat. The interior smelled of expensive cologne, rain, and old leather. He leaned in close, his face inches from mine. "Dr. Vance is waiting at the clinic. He will fix your arm properly and give you something for the pain. Do not worry about your mother, her medical bills have just been cleared in full." I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. "Cleared? Mr. Blackwell, that's seventy-one thousand dollars—" "Consider it an advance on your new position," he interrupted softly, his thumb brushing a stray tear from my cheek with surprising gentleness. "You work for me now, Kate. Not as a maid. As my executive assistant. Your life is valuable. Remember that." Before I could process his words, he closed the door. Through tinted glass, I watched as he turned to Marcus and a dozen heavily armed men who had suddenly materialized from the shadows of the garage. I couldn't hear what Damon said, but I saw the precise, brutal hand gestures. I saw the way Marcus and the other enforcers nodded once, grim and resolute. As the Mercedes glided silently out of the subterranean garage into the rainy night, I looked back through the rear window. Damon stood alone under the flickering fluorescent lights, watching us leave, a solitary monolith of absolute power ready to tear an empire apart to avenge a broken arm.
