Chapter 1 - The Caramelized GingerThe grand dining salon of Damian Blackwood’s Manhattan penthouse was suspended fifty floors above the rainy grid of Central Park.

Twenty-two syndicate underbosses, private bankers, and corrupt city officials sat around an ebony table illuminated by modern crystal pendants.

Damian Blackwood sat at the center.

Thirty-seven years old.

Known across the Eastern Seaboard as the Undertaker of Wall Street—a man who spoke in hushed, measured tones while dismantling billion-dollar financial empires without mercy.

Beside him sat Seraphina Thorne, daughter of the city’s most ruthless banking dynasty, wearing a shimmering platinum gown and diamonds that glittered like shards of ice.

The dessert course had arrived: individual miniature lemon tarts with glazed crowns.

Damian lifted a silver dessert fork and broke off a small piece of the tart.

He tasted it.

He stopped chewing.

His gray, predatory eyes went entirely rigid, staring down at the cracked lemon curd as if he had just seen a ghost rising from the plate.

Standing beside the wine cart was a quiet pantry maid holding a fresh napkin.

Her gaze was directed respectfully at the floorboards, her dark curls tucked beneath a plain black cap.

Her employment file listed her as Maya Lin, twenty-four years old.

Damian set his fork down with a sharp, metallic ring against the ebony wood.

“Who baked these tarts?”

His voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried the weight of a firing squad.

The laughter along the table evaporated instantly.

Seraphina sighed with theatrical irritation, dabbing her lip with a silk napkin.

“Damian, darling, the pastry chef dropped the imported soufflés on the way up the service elevator. This clumsy girl baked some leftover pantry tarts to fill the gap. If they are substandard, I’ll have security escort her from the penthouse tonight.”

Damian didn't look at Seraphina.

He stood up slowly, pushing his chair back until it clicked against the wall.

He walked down the side of the table, stopping three inches from Maya.

“Take off your gloves.”

Maya pulled off the white cotton gloves, revealing rough, burn-scarred knuckles.

Damian gestured toward an empty armchair beside the table.

“Sit down.”

Seraphina gasped, her platinum dress rustling violently.

“Damian! You are humiliating my family in front of our banking board! You cannot seat a scullery maid at our engagement table!”

Damian turned his head toward his bride-to-be.

His stare was so chilling, so devoid of human empathy, that Seraphina’s mouth snapped shut in genuine fear.

“I said sit, Miss Lin.”

Maya pulled out the chair and sat down, keeping her hands folded in her lap.

Damian pushed his personal plate in front of her.

“Tell me about the filling.”

Maya picked up the fork, took a tiny taste, and set it down.

“The lemon curd is balanced with wild mountain honey,” she said, her voice smooth and devoid of fear. “The ginger was sliced paper-thin, simmered in cane sugar syrup for forty minutes, and caramelized in brown butter before being folded into the citrus.”

Damian’s jaw twitched.

“Why forty minutes?”

“Because any less leaves the ginger pungent and sharp,” Maya replied calmly. “And any more turns the syrup bitter, which overpowers the lemon.”

Twenty-two men sat like statues, not daring to reach for their drinks.

Damian rested both hands on the table, leaning forward until his shadow enveloped the young maid.

“My younger sister, Alyssa, was the only person in this city who caramelized ginger for exactly forty minutes,” Damian whispered, each word dropping like lead. “She made those tarts every year on her birthday.”

He paused, his eyes narrowing into deadly slits.

“Alyssa died in a car crash on the Taconic Parkway six years ago.”

Maya looked up, meeting the terrifying gaze of the mafia kingpin.

“Your sister didn't die of injuries from the crash, Mr. Blackwood.”

The room seemed to run out of air.

Seraphina leaped to her feet, knocking over her champagne glass, sending pale vintage wine spilling across the ebony table.

“Damian, don't listen to this deranged street rat! Security, drag her out of this penthouse right now!”

None of the guards moved.

Damian’s head of security had already drawn his suppressed firearm, pointing it directly at Seraphina’s private bodyguard.

Damian didn't break eye contact with Maya.

“What happened on the Taconic Parkway, Maya?”

Maya reached into the pocket of her apron and produced an antique silver pocket watch with a cracked crystal face.

Tucked inside the back casing was a folded, oil-stained mechanic's receipt.

“Your sister was pulled from the wreckage alive and brought to a private trauma ward in Westchester,” Maya said, her voice ringing out across the frozen room. “And the doctor who signed the lethal injection order was on the payroll of the Thorne family's private investment fund.”
