Chapter 12 - Burn Marks and Silver ChainsThat evening, the penthouse was quiet, wrapped in the warm, golden glow of the setting sun over the Hudson River.

We sat together on the deep velvet sofa in the private library, watching the twilight paint the Manhattan skyline in shades of purple and amber.
On the low cherrywood table between us sat a freshly baked plate of lemon tarts, their caramelized ginger crowns glistening beneath the soft lamp light.
Damian reached out, gently taking my right hand into his. His thumb traced the rough, pale burn scars that crossed my knuckles.
“Does it ever hurt?” he asked softly, his eyes filled with deep, protective sorrow.
“Only when the winter winds are very cold,” I admitted honestly. “For six years, I looked at these scars and felt only fear and shame. I thought they were the mark of a powerless girl who couldn't stop a murder.”
Damian lifted my hand to his lips, pressing a warm, reverent kiss against the scarred skin.
“These are not marks of shame, Maya,” Damian said, his voice resonant and steady. “These are marks of honor. They prove that when everyone else in that room was bought with dirty money, one eighteen-year-old girl stood in the fire to protect my sister.”
He looked into my eyes, his gray gaze blazing with an intensity that made my heart race wildly against my ribs.
“I spent my life believing that strength meant being ruthless,” Damian continued, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur. “I built towers, acquired fleets, and broke enemies because I thought armor was the only thing that could keep me safe from pain.”
He reached up, gently cupping the side of my face with his large hand.
“And then you walked into my dining room carrying a plate of lemon tarts and an unbreakable spirit. You showed me that real strength isn't about cruelty, Maya. It’s about love that doesn't bend, and courage that doesn't break.”
My breath caught in my throat. “Damian...”
“I love you, Maya,” he whispered against my lips. “With every fiber of my being. With every beat of my heart.”
Tears blurred my vision, but my smile was radiant and complete.

“I love you too, Damian,” I breathed. “More than words could ever say.”
He leaned in, his lips meeting mine in a deep, passionate kiss that washed away every lingering ghost of the past, sealing our souls together in the warm autumn twilight.
