Chapter 9 - Underbosses at the CrossroadBy noon, news of the Thorne dynasty’s total collapse had shattered the financial markets of Wall Street and sent shockwaves through New York’s commercial underworld.

The headline across the New York Post blared in massive black type:
BILLION-DOLLAR BANKING CARTEL TOPPLED: THORNE FAMILY ARRESTED IN HEIRESS MURDER CONSPIRACY.
Inside the grand dining salon of Blackwood Tower, the ebony table had been cleared of the spilled wine and shattered crystal.
The twenty-two syndicate underbosses, private bankers, and city delegates were summoned back to their seats. But this time, the atmosphere was entirely different.
The arrogance, the whispered side conversations, and the calculating smirks were gone. Every man in that room sat upright, hands folded on the table, their eyes fixed on the empty chair at the head of the room.
The double mahogany doors swung open.
Damian walked in, wearing a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his presence commanding absolute, undisputed authority.
And by his side, walking with quiet elegance in a tailored navy silk dress with the sapphire necklace resting on her chest, was me.
Damian pulled out the armchair to his immediate right—the very chair where Seraphina had sat twelve hours earlier.
He looked at me with open respect.
“Please sit, Maya.”
I took my seat gracefully, smoothing the silk of my dress.
Damian sat at the head of the table. He rested his forearms on the wood, looking at the twenty-two men who controlled the city’s commerce.
“Gentlemen,” Damian began, his voice resonant and steady. “Last night, an alliance built on deception, greed, and murder was dismantled before our eyes. The Thorne family’s holdings have been completely absorbed by the Blackwood estate.”
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle across the room.
“Some of you in this room knew about the financial discrepancies six years ago,” Damian continued, his gray eyes sweeping across three older bankers who immediately looked down at their plates in shame. “Some of you chose to look the other way because the interest payments were high and the profits were easy.”
He leaned forward, his voice dropping into that chilling, razor-sharp register.
“That era of our syndicate is officially dead. From this day forward, any man who conducts business in this city under my name will adhere to one standard: absolute transparency, unyielding honor, and complete protection of the innocent. Any man who deviates from this standard will share a cell with Harold Thorne in federal prison.”
Every single underboss at the table nodded in immediate, profound agreement.
“We stand with you, Don Blackwood,” the senior commissioner from Queens declared, raising his water goblet in a solemn salute. “Now and always.”
Damian nodded once, acknowledging their loyalty. Then he turned his gaze onto me, his expression softening with unmistakable warmth.
“And effective immediately,” Damian announced to the assembly, “Maya Lin is appointed the Executive Director of the Alyssa Blackwood Charitable Foundation, with full oversight over our culinary academies, pediatric hospitals, and community trust funds.”

A wave of spontaneous, genuine applause broke out across the grand dining salon.
For the first time in six years, the air in Blackwood Tower tasted clean.
