Chapter 12 - The Fall of the Vance Dynasty

The following month, justice was officially finalized in the high court of Rome.
Julian Vance, broken by age and treason, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the maximum-security facility in Spoleto, stripped of all personal wealth and family honors.
Dominic Vance was sentenced to thirty years in solitary confinement for armed insurrection and attempted capital homicide.
And Camilla Vance was sentenced to twenty-five years at the federal correctional facility in Rebibbia, Rome.
Her designer dresses were replaced by rough prison denim, her diamond tiaras replaced by steel bars, and her days spent scrubbing the concrete floors of the prison laundry—the very labor she had once mocked and despised.
As the news reports broadcast the final sentencing across national television, Alessandro turned off the monitor in his private study and tossed the remote onto the desk.
“Justice is complete,” Alessandro said quietly.
He walked over to where I was standing on the private balcony overlooking the lake. The spring sun was warm, the azaleas blooming in vibrant pinks and purples across the terrace gardens below.
He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.
“What are you thinking about, my love?” he asked softly.
“I was thinking about how quickly a life can change,” I smiled, leaning back into his warm, solid chest. “A year ago, I was counting pennies to buy bread in Turin, terrified for my brother’s life. Now, I’m standing on the most beautiful terrace in the world, holding the hand of the man I love.”

“You didn't just change your life, Clara,” Alessandro whispered, kissing my cheek. “You changed mine. You gave me back my family, my honor, and my heart.”
