Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Vance Syndicate

The peaceful afternoon over Lake Como dissolved as sirens wailed along the perimeter walls of Villa Barsotti. Steel blast shutters slid down over the high arched windows of the ballroom with heavy, metallic clangs, turning the gilded palace into an impenetrable fortress.
Alessandro stood at the central tactical table in the command bunker beneath the estate, studying high-resolution satellite feeds displayed across four massive monitors.
Dominic Vance was not a politician like his brother Julian. He was a ruthless mercenary commander who had spent a decade operating private security networks in Eastern Europe. Seeing his family’s multi-billion-dollar empire dismantled in a single morning, Dominic had chosen the path of total scorched-earth retaliation.
“They have twelve armored personnel carriers and three tactical gunboats approaching from the lake,” Marco reported, tracing the glowing red icons converging on the estate. “They bypassed the provincial police checkpoints by using Vance-owned emergency frequencies. ETA: fifteen minutes.”
“What about the council capos?” I asked, leaning over the tactical map beside Alessandro.
“They are being evacuated through the deep subterranean tunnels toward our mountain airstrip in Switzerland,” Alessandro replied, his face illuminated by the blue glow of the monitors. “This fight belongs to the House of Barsotti.”
Alessandro turned to me, his dark eyes softening with deep, protective urgency. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping the side of my face.
“Clara, I want you in the safe room beneath the master suite,” he said softly. “It has independent life support, reinforced titanium plating, and enough supplies to withstand a month-long siege.”
I looked straight into his obsidian eyes and shook my head.
“No, Alessandro,” I said firmly. “I’m not hiding in a bunker while you defend this home.”
“Clara, they have heavy artillery,” Alessandro pressed, his voice tight with fear for my safety. “Dominic doesn't care about council laws or hostages. He wants to exterminate everyone inside this villa.”
“And I am the majority witness to Julian’s crimes,” I replied, my voice steady and unwavering. “I know the layout of the old west catacombs better than anyone on this estate. I spent nine months cleaning every stone tunnel and supply cellar. Dominic’s lake team will try to breach through the water gates beneath the old Roman terrace—it’s the only unfortified entry point along the shoreline.”
Alessandro stared at me, then looked at Silvio, who sat quietly beside the terminal.
Silvio nodded slowly, a grim smile touching his lips. “She is right, Alessandro. The water gates were built in 1890 for wine shipments. If Dominic has old architectural blueprints, he will funnel his elite breaching team through the wine cellars.”
Alessandro looked back at me, a mixture of awe and fierce pride burning in his gaze. “You truly are an extraordinary woman, Clara Evans.”
He reached into the tactical weapon rack beside the terminal and pulled out a lightweight, compact 9mm sidearm with a custom carbon-fiber grip. He checked the magazine, chambered a round with a crisp, mechanical snap, and placed the weapon gently into my hands.
“Keep the safety on until you are ready to fire,” Alessandro instructed, guiding my fingers along the frame. “Two hands, aim for center mass. But you stay behind Marco’s line. Am I understood?”
“Understood,” I replied, feeling the cool weight of the steel in my grip.
“Marco,” Alessandro commanded, pulling his own tactical rifle from the rack and strapping a combat vest across his chest. “Position Team Alpha at the main courtyard gates to engage their vehicle convoy. You and I will take Team Bravo down to the Roman water gates.”
We descended into the damp, ancient corridors beneath the west terrace. The air grew cold, smelling of lake water and aged oak barrels. We took up positions behind heavy stone pillars and antique wine casks lining the subterranean loading dock.
Outside, the first thunderous boom echoed across the water as Dominic’s gunboats opened fire on the estate’s outer perimeter walls.
