Chapter 11 - The Wedding Preparations And The Ghost Of The Past Finally Laid To Rest

The crisp autumn air of Boston carried the scent of roasted chestnuts and falling leaves, but inside the Mercer estate, the atmosphere was thick with the sweet aroma of baking wedding cakes and the sound of excited laughter. Six months after Adrian proposed under the weeping willow tree, the mansion had completely shed its dark, brooding reputation. It was no longer the fortress of a feared syndicate boss, but a vibrant home filled with light, music, and the infectious energy of six-year-old twins.
I stood in the grand foyer, holding a clipboard covered in seating charts, floral arrangements, and catering menus, when two small arms wrapped around my knees.
"Claire! Claire! Look at what Daddy made for us!" Lily squealed, holding up two miniature white bridesmaid dresses adorned with pale pink silk sashes.
Emma bounced right behind her, her eyes wide with excitement. "He said we get to walk down the aisle right before you, and we're going to scatter real rose petals instead of fake ones!"
I smiled, kneeling down to wipe a speck of glitter off Emma's cheek. "That sounds absolutely wonderful, girls. But remember, you have to practice walking slowly, not running like little race cars."
Just then, footsteps echoed down the grand staircase. Adrian descended, wearing a casual charcoal shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking every bit the handsome, devoted partner he had become. The dark circles under his eyes—permanent fixtures from the year of grief when we first met—were entirely gone, replaced by a deep, grounded peace.
He walked over, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin gently on my shoulder. "Don't let them fool you, Claire. They've been practicing running down the hallway like track stars for three days straight."
"We are not!" Lily and Emma protested in unison, before breaking into giggles and running off toward the kitchen in search of Mrs. Gable and fresh cookies.
Adrian chuckled, turning me around in his arms and looking down into my eyes. His expression softened, the playful warmth giving way to a quiet, profound sincerity. "Are you nervous?" he asked softly, his thumb tracing my jawline.

"A little," I confessed, resting my hands against his chest. "It still feels like a dream sometimes. A year ago, I was just a twenty-four-year-old nanny hiding in a nursery, terrified of you and your underworld empire. And now..."
"Now you're the heart of this family," Adrian interrupted gently, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. "The federal trials are officially over. The last of the Vance loyalists received their life sentences in maximum security yesterday. There are no more secrets, no more hidden ledgers, and no more shadows waiting in the dark. Just us."
