Chapter 9 - The Trap Springs And The Collapse Of The Vance Dynasty

Eleanor's cold blue eyes darted from Adrian to me, then down to the heavy leather-bound book in my hands. For the first time, a flicker of genuine panic crossed her otherwise composed face.
"You're too late, Eleanor," Adrian said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, low register that commanded absolute submission. "The federal attorney general already has copies of every transaction, every shell company, and every bribe routed through your Swiss accounts. Your brother already confessed to the poisoning of my wife. And you? You just walked straight into a recording studio."
Adrian tapped his wristwatch, and from the corner of the study, the hidden speakers crackled to life, replaying every single word Eleanor had just spoken over the front gate intercom—including her explicit threat against St. Jude's Academy and the girls.
Eleanor spun around toward the door, but it was already too late. Two federal agents in tactical windbreakers stepped out from the hallway, their badges gleaming under the chandelier as they clicked heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, extortion, and racketering," the lead agent announced crisply, reading her her rights as they hauled her backward toward the exit.
Eleanor glared daggers at me as she was dragged past my desk, her voice spitting pure venom. "You think this is over, little nanny? The syndicate has roots deeper than you can possibly imagine. You'll never be safe!"
"She's already safer than you'll ever be," Adrian replied coldly, slamming the heavy study doors shut behind them.
The silence that followed was absolute. The weight of the entire past year—the grief, the fear, the paranoia, the secret threats—seemed to lift from the Mercer estate all at once, vanishing like smoke into the Boston air.
Adrian let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning back against the heavy mahogany door and closing his eyes. I walked over, setting the ledger down on the desk, and gently placed my hand on his arm.
"It's really over, isn't it?" I asked softly.
May you like
Adrian opened his eyes, looking down at me with a warmth that completely melted away the last remaining traces of the ruthless mafia boss. He reached out, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and pulling me flush against his chest, burying his face in my neck.
"It's over," he whispered against my skin. "Because of you."
