Chapter 4 - The Traitor Revealed And The Gunpoint Standoff In The Wine Cellar

The figure stepped out from behind a massive oak wine rack, the dim emergency lighting glinting off the polished barrel of a silenced Glock. It wasn't one of the unknown tactical thugs from the lawn. It was someone wearing an expensive, tailored charcoal suit—someone whose face I recognized immediately from the framed photographs hanging in Adrian's private study.
Marcus Thorne. Adrian Mercer's chief legal counsel and supposedly his most trusted confidant for over a decade.
"Marcus," I gasped, instinctively pulling Lily and Emma behind my legs, shielding them with my own body while my right hand desperately gripped the heavy leather ledger hidden behind my back.
Marcus smiled, but it didn't reach his cold, reptilian eyes. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses with his free hand, looking down at the children with an unsettling, detached curiosity. "Such a shame. Truly. Adrian hired you to bring a bit of life back into this mausoleum, and instead, you've decided to play detective. Hand over the ledger, Claire. Be a good girl, take the kids back to the nursery, and maybe—just maybe—I'll let you all leave town with your lives."
"Don't listen to him, Claire! He's a liar!"
The sharp, authoritative roar echoed off the stone walls of the wine cellar.
From the shadows near the basement stairs, Adrian emerged. He was moving with a slight limp, blood staining the shoulder of his torn white dress shirt where a graze had caught him, but his eyes burned with a terrifying, unadulterated fury. In his hands, his 9mm pistol was locked squarely onto Marcus Thorne's chest.
Marcus didn't flinch. Instead, he chuckled, lowering his weapon just a fraction to point it directly at Emma’s head. "Drop your gun, Adrian. Or I swear to God, the first bullet goes through your youngest daughter's skull. You can mourn her just like you mourned Rebecca."
The temperature in the underground cellar plummeted to absolute zero. I watched the color drain from Adrian's face, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his firearm. The man who controlled half of Boston, the merciless syndicate kingpin, was completely paralyzed by the safety of his children.
"Marcus," Adrian whispered, his voice shaking with a rage so deep it felt elemental. "You were my brother. You sat at my dining table. You held my daughters when they were babies."
"Business is business, Adrian," Marcus sneered, his finger twitching nervously against the trigger guard. "You grew soft after Rebecca died. You wanted to pull out of the drug routes, you wanted legitimacy, you wanted to turn this family into a respectable charity case. The syndicate couldn't allow that. And Rebecca... well, Rebecca simply knew too much about our offshore accounts. She had to be eliminated. Just like you and these little girls are going to be eliminated tonight."
My mind raced at a million miles per hour. Marcus was entirely focused on Adrian. His attention was split, his ego blinding him to the fact that I was standing right beside him with the exact ledger he had been hunting for twelve months.
I didn't think. I reacted.

With a fierce, primal scream, I lunged forward, swinging the heavy leather-bound ledger with all my might directly into the side of Marcus Thorne's head.
*CRACK.*
