Chapter 3 - The Secret Compartment And The Midnight Escape Through The East Wing

The sound of violence echoing through the quiet corridors of the Mercer estate shattered any illusion of safety I had left. Clutching the heavy leather ledger to my chest like a shield, I stood frozen in the center of the nursery. The children were still asleep, blissfully unaware that death was walking the halls just outside their door.
I knew I had to move. Staying in the nursery made us sitting ducks if Adrian failed to neutralize the intruders. But taking two sleeping children down dark staircases while an unknown number of syndicate hitmen prowled the grounds was suicidal.
My eyes darted toward the antique mahogany wardrobe in the corner of the room. When I first started working here, Mrs. Gable had casually mentioned that the older historic homes in Boston—especially those built by old-money families with ties to the maritime trade—were riddled with architectural quirks, including servant passages and safe rooms designed during the Prohibition era.
I rushed to the wardrobe, pulled open the heavy doors, and began flinging hangers aside. Pushing past Lily's small dresses and Emma's cardigans, I reached the back panel of the cabinet. I pressed my palms against the cedarwood, shoving upward. With a heavy, metallic click, the entire back panel swung inward, revealing a dark, narrow vertical shaft lit only by a faint emergency glow-strip running along the baseboard.
A steep set of metal spiral stairs descended into the darkness below.
"Okay, okay, think, Claire, think," I muttered to myself, my breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.
I turned back toward the bed. Lily was stirring, her eyes fluttering open as she felt the shift in the room's energy. "Claire? Where are we going? Is Mommy back?"
The question tore a fresh hole in my heart, but I forced a calm, reassuring smile onto my face as I rushed to her side. "Hey, sweetie. No, Mommy isn't here, but we're going to play a very exciting secret agent game. We need to be super quiet, like little mice, and crawl into a special secret fort."
Emma woke up instantly at the mention of a game, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "A secret fort? Can I bring my teddy?"
"Bring your teddy, grab each other's hands, and follow me right now," I urged, lifting Emma into my arms while taking Lily's small, warm hand in mine.
I bundled them into the wardrobe, guiding them down the narrow metal staircase one by one. The air down here smelled of dust, old stone, and damp earth, but it was secure. I pulled the wardrobe back panel closed from the inside, plunging us into absolute silence save for the rapid beating of my own heart.
Using the faint emergency light, I led the girls down the winding passage, which seemed to run parallel to the main hallway. After what felt like hours of creeping through the tight concrete corridor, the passage ended at a heavy iron grate set into the wall at floor level. I pushed against it, and it swung outward, opening into the dimly lit basement beneath the east wing, right next to the wine cellar.

As my feet touched the cold concrete floor of the cellar, a low voice spoke from the shadows just six feet away, making me freeze in absolute terror.
"Well, well, well. What do we have here? The nanny and the little heiresses, taking a midnight stroll?"
