Chapter 6 - The Morning After The Blood And The New Rules Of The Mercer Estate

The morning sun broke over the Boston harbor, casting long, golden shadows across the polished mahogany floors of the Mercer estate, but the heavy gloom that had suffocated the mansion for a year was entirely gone. When I woke up in my own guest room—no longer sleeping on the edge of a twin bed or hiding in secret passageways—the silence of the house felt peaceful rather than ominous. Marcus Thorne and his remaining loyalists were safely locked behind federal bars, and the silent alarm Adrian had triggered had brought clean, incorruptible state troopers instead of corrupt syndicate cronies.
I sat up, stretching my aching muscles, and looked at the digital clock on the nightstand. It was barely 7:00 AM. Usually, by this time, the girls would be tossing and turning from nightmares, and Mrs. Gable would be nervously brewing chamomile tea downstairs. But today, the mansion was quiet with the sound of genuine, restful peace.
There was a soft tap at my door before it slowly creaked open. Adrian stood in the doorway, no longer wearing the wrinkled black suit of a stressed-out syndicate boss. Instead, he wore a simple dark gray crewneck sweater and slacks, looking less like the most feared man in Boston and more like an ordinary father. He held a steaming ceramic mug in each hand, his dark eyes softening when he saw me awake.
"Morning, Claire," he said, his deep voice carrying a warm, melodic resonance that sent a pleasant shiver down my spine. "I figured you might need this more than coffee today." He walked over and handed me a mug of hot chamomile tea with a squeeze of fresh lemon, just the way I liked it.
"Thank you, Mr. Mercer," I mumbled, pulling the duvet tighter around my shoulders as I accepted the mug. "Are the girls still sleeping?"
Adrian chuckled, leaning his broad shoulder against the doorframe. "Sleeping? They've been awake since six, and right now they're holding a formal council in the kitchen trying to decide whether to demand pancakes or waffles for breakfast. And for the record, Claire, it's Adrian. Drop the 'Mr. Mercer' business. Unless, of course, you're trying to keep me at a professional distance."
A faint blush crept up my neck, and I looked down into my tea. "Habits die hard when your boss is a former mafia kingpin."
"Former," he corrected gently, stepping closer. "That chapter is closed. The federal prosecutors have the ledger, the assets are being legally reorganized, and my only job from here on out is making sure my daughters grow up safe, happy, and loved. And..." He paused, his gaze intensifying as he looked straight into my eyes. "...making sure the woman who saved us doesn't run away."
May you like
"I'm not running anywhere," I whispered, meeting his gaze.
Before either of us could say anything more, a pair of rapid, thunderous footsteps echoed down the hallway, followed immediately by two small bodies crashing into my bedroom door.
