Chapter 12 - The Quiet Restoration of Order

The heavy oak doors of the estate library swung open smoothly, letting in the warm afternoon light filtering through the stained-glass windows. I walked in, carrying a heavy leather-bound ledger under my arm. The room had been thoroughly scrubbed of every trace of chaos. Clara stood near the back corner bookcase, carefully dusting the lower shelves with a soft microfiber cloth. Hearing my footsteps, she froze, slowly turning around to face me, her hands nervously smoothing down her apron. “Mr. Vance,” she murmured, dipping her head respectfully. “Clara,” I acknowledged, placing the leather ledger squarely in the center of the mahogany desk. “Marcus tells me you accepted the archive management position.” Clara swallowed. “Yes, sir. My doctors called this morning—my brother is responding remarkably well to the new therapy. I don't know how to thank you.” “You showed courage when everyone else in this house chose cowardice,” I said, leaning against the desk. “Guard these archives well; they hold the true history of this family.” Clara nodded firmly. “I won't let you down, sir.” I gave her an approving nod and dismissed her with a wave of my hand as she quietly slipped out through the side doors.
