Chapter 7 - Descent into the Subterranean Vault

The private elevator descended deep beneath the Manhattan shoreline into the subterranean vault where my family’s classified records and historical artifacts were locked away behind three feet of reinforced steel and biometric security. The air down here was cold, dry, and smelled faintly of old parchment and raw electrical ozone. I stepped out into the brightly lit corridor, followed by two armed enforcers who half-carried Vivian down the long, polished hallway. Her designer heels clicked frantically against the marble floor, her strength visibly failing as she realized where we were heading. At the far end of the corridor stood the memorial alcove of my mother Isabella, marked by a massive slab of white Carrara marble. The fresh, dark lines of industrial mortar where the tomb had been unsealed and hastily resealed were an open wound across our family’s history. I stopped directly in front of the damaged sarcophagus, running a gloved hand over the fractured stone. “Look at it, Vivian,” I said softly. Vivian stumbled forward, her knees hitting the hard marble floor as the enforcers released her arms. She stared up at the broken stone, her chest heaving. “I had to do it, Gabriel,” she whispered, her voice breaking into a desperate plea. “My family’s debt to the syndicate... if we didn't recover the master key from your mother’s casket, they were going to liquidate our assets and throw us into the harbor.” I turned slowly, looking down at her with a gaze entirely devoid of mercy. “Your family’s debt is of no consequence to me, Vivian. But using my mother’s burial site as a pawn in your corporate games is a debt that can only be paid in full.” I pulled the black-diamond crucifix from my inner coat pocket, holding it up so the harsh fluorescent lights caught the deep, light-absorbing fire of the stones. “You didn't just steal an heirloom,” I whispered, stepping closer. “You broke a blood oath. And now you’re going to watch your family’s entire empire dismantled piece by piece.”
