Chapter 2 - The Offshore Terminal at Midnight

The freezing brine spray of the outer harbor lashed against the reinforced glass of my private helicopter as we descended toward Terminal Four. Below us, the multi-tiered offshore facility—a massive floating fortress of reinforced steel and titanium pilings owned by the Vance shipping conglomerate—glowed under the harsh amber wash of floodlights. Beside me in the leather cabin, Vivian sat rigidly, clutching her diamond-studded clutch, her eyes darting toward the heavy security doors as if looking for an escape hatch that didn't exist out here in the middle of the black Atlantic. She knew what this terminal meant: no local police jurisdiction, no prying journalists, and no appeals once the heavy iron blast doors sealed shut. My chief navigator and cartographer, Julian, sat across from us, his face bruised and pale, nursing a torn linen blouse where Vivian’s high-society allies had attempted to strip away his operational logs earlier that evening. I adjusted my cuffs, my eyes fixed on the landing pad below where the terminal captain stood at strict attention alongside a squad of armored maritime enforcers. As the chopper skidded onto the damp steel deck and the turbine whine wound down to a low roar, the cabin door was wrenched open from the outside. The terminal captain saluted sharply, his weathered face tight with tension. “Mr. Vance,” he barked over the gale-force wind. “The cargo transfer from the unflagged freighter is secured in vault bay three. But we’ve got an unauthorized signal pinging from the secondary navigation array.” I stepped out onto the freezing platform, the salt air stinging my lungs. I looked back inside at Julian, who was struggling to stand with his damaged ledger under his arm, and then down at Vivian, who was trembling beneath her designer coat. “Captain,” I said quietly, my voice carrying the weight of absolute command across the windy deck, “bring a cashmere wrap for my wife before I strip this dock of its flags.”
