Chapter 13 - A Toast to the Future

The private dining hall of the estate was bathed in the warm glow of crystal chandeliers, casting brilliant refractions across the polished mahogany banquet table. I sat at the head of the long table, dressed in a sharp evening tuxedo, swirling a glass of rare vintage burgundy while a string quartet played softly from the balcony overhead. Marcus stood silently in the arched doorway, keeping watch. Tonight wasn't about business or federal indictments; it was about reclaiming absolute peace after a storm that had threatened to tear my legacy apart. Marcus walked over, placing a sealed envelope bearing the federal district attorney’s seal beside my wine glass. I sliced through the crimson wax, pulling out a single sheet of stiff parchment. Arthur Vance’s assets had been liquidated and forfeited, Viktor’s syndicate operations had been dismantled by an international naval blockade, and Vivian had safely arrived at her secluded alpine estate under permanent exile. The threat was officially extinguished. I picked up my crystal wine glass, holding it up toward the flickering candlelight in a silent toast to the memory of my mother Isabella.
