Chapter 11 - Cleaning House and the Rebuilding of the Moretti Syndicate From the Ashes of Betrayal

The snowstorm continued to blanket the northern docks in a shroud of pure white, but inside the main administrative office, the atmosphere was thick with the smell of ozone, cold steel, and absolute power. Vince and Paulie sat tied to heavy steel chairs beneath the harsh fluorescent lights, their faces bruised and their pride completely shattered. They had tried to sell out the Moretti family to Salvatore Gambino, blinded by greed and arrogance, only to find themselves stripped of their wealth and betrayed by their own accomplices before a single shot could be fired against my loyalists.

I stood over them, my hands resting casually in my coat pockets, my expression entirely cold and devoid of mercy. Behind me, Marcus held a thick leather-bound ledger detailing every illegal transaction, kickback, and offshore transfer the two traitors had executed over the past three years.

"Dante, please!" Vince pleaded, his voice cracking as he looked up at me with desperate, bloodshot eyes. "It was a mistake! Salvatore tricked us! He promised us protection if we—"

"If you what?" I interrupted, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper that echoed off the concrete walls. "If you stabbed the family in the back while my back was turned? You thought I was weak because I was distracted. You thought the Moretti crown was up for grabs because I let my guard down for a few months."

"Boss, give us another chance," Paulie chimed in, spitting a mixture of blood and saliva onto the floor. "We built this syndicate with you! Remember Brooklyn? Remember the docks in '14?"

"I remember everything, Paulie," I replied coldly. "And because I remember, I know that loyalty isn't something you lease; it’s something you honor. You broke that oath the moment you picked up Salvatore’s phone."

I turned to Marcus. "Hand them over to federal authorities anonymously with a complete dossier of their offshore accounts. Let the SEC and the FBI handle their retirement plans. They won't see daylight for thirty years."

Marcus nodded grimly, signaling two of our loyal guards to drag the screaming traitors out of the room.

As the heavy metal door slammed shut, the office fell into a profound, suffocating silence. I looked across the room toward the corner, where Isabella sat quietly in a leather armchair, nursing a fresh cup of black coffee. She hadn't said a word during the interrogation. She hadn't needed to. Her mere presence in the room served as a silent reminder of who had actually saved the syndicate from total collapse.

"You handled that efficiently," Isabella said, her voice calm and measured as she looked up at me.

"I learned from the best strategist on the East Coast," I admitted honestly, walking over to stand before her chair.

She looked up at me, her dark eyes reflecting the harsh overhead light. "Efficiency isn't enough, Dante. Managing a mafia empire requires strength, but surviving a marriage requires something much rarer: absolute honesty."

"I know," I murmured, feeling the weight of my past mistakes pressing down on my shoulders with crushing gravity. "I threw away eleven years of trust for a temporary illusion. I thought power and fear made me invincible, but the moment you left, I realized I was just a beggar sitting on a throne of garbage."

Isabella didn't smile, but the hard, defensive barrier around her eyes softened just a fraction. "Words are easy when you're standing in the wreckage, Dante. Let's see if you can rebuild the foundation."
